This is Patsy, playing happily today. But her story, like those of so many animals at the sanctuary, is one of survival, resilience, and endurance.
Patsy is a victim of hakka patas, one of the cruelest devices ever created by humans. Commonly used in Sri Lanka, it is one of the leading causes of elephant deaths on the island. These improvised explosive devices are hidden inside food. When an animal bites down, the device detonates in its mouth, causing catastrophic injuries.
Many victims die instantly. Others suffer prolonged and agonizing deaths from their injuries, starvation, and thirst. Although these devices are primarily intended for wild boar, countless other animals, both wild and domestic, fall victim to them. Dogs, in particular, are frequent casualties.
No one believed Patsy would survive. Even we feared that her injuries were too severe. But Patsy fought with incredible determination to live, and we fought alongside her every step of the way.
Today, she can play, eat, and drink independently. Her recovery is nothing short of remarkable.
Hakka patas is illegal, but outdated animal welfare laws, more than 100 years old, combined with a lack of enforcement and political will to protect animals, mean that these tragedies continue. Those working to save and care for victims face tremendous challenges every day.
That is why your support is so crucial. With your help, we can continue rescuing, treating, and giving animals like Patsy a second chance at life.
