1/16 One year ago I started a new beat at the @latimes. It was not a traditional religion beat. Instead, we called it “Faith, Spirituality and Joy.” It was an exciting container for story ideas, but also, I was nervous. There was no prescribed path. latimes.com/about/pressrelea…

"Our life is nothing but change and it is to this change that I bow deeply. I bow to this change, I bow deeply to life itself." Beautiful quote from the late Buddhist teacher Ruth Denison.

Labyrinth facilitator Katie Bulls calls labyrinth walking "a contemplative practice for the restless meditator." There's so much to learn on the journey to center. latimes.com/california/story…

Just in time for World Labyrinth Day (it's a thing) - I did a deep dive on labyrinths and the people who love them. I was never anti-labyrinth, but it wasn't something I'd given a lot of thought to until... latimes.com/california/story…

It took a few more weeks for me to realize maybe I needed to write about labyrinths. And oh boy - did I learn A LOT. Metaphor, metaphor, metaphor. Journey to the center. The winding path of life. The brain. The intestines. Finger labyrinths!

I couldn't fit everything in the story, but I hope I was able to at least pique your interest in labyrinths! Please read and share. And those beautiful photos are by @francineorr - my reporting partner every STEP of the way. THANK YOU! latimes.com/california/story…

Hi Twitterfolk! I'm interested in speaking to folks who work (or previously worked) for a mental health mobile crisis service in California. Please reach out via DM or email if you'd like to chat, even informally -- thanks!

I had the honor of profiling Iran's first ever female Naqqal - an epic story teller who brings stories of the Shahnameh (Book of Kings) to life. Her name is Gordafarid, and her story is an epic in itself! Truly, the most remarkable people live in LA. latimes.com/california/story…

For 3 years the indefatigable @LATkarenkaplan has edited and then written the @latimes' staggeringly comprehensive and thorough COVID-19 newsletter. Today she laid it to rest. Truly the end of an era. latimes.com/science/newslett…

Tornadoes are not something most of us worry about in LA. So these pictures of the damage from a "weak" tornado that touched down in Montebello in LA County Wednesday are especially staggering - at least to me. latimes.com/california/story…

Working the night shift last night, I learned that tornadoes are not as rare in California as many of us think. There are 2 to 3 in Southern California a year and 7 to 10 across the whole state.

The tornado in Montebello was weak - an EF1 out of a possible 0 to 5 on the Enhanced Fujita scale of tornado measurements. It lasted less than 3 minutes and had a path less than a .5 mile long.
