Encounter is clearly not a game for everybody, but the Steam algorithm links the visibility of a game to the number of whish lists it has received, so if you feel like wish-listing the game on your Steam account that would be very appreciated! 🙏 store.steampowered.com/app/3…

My Cyberpunk themed Oric demo was finally shown yesterday evening at the Nova demo party, here is the video that was shown, captured from a Oric 1 with a Loci device. I hope you like it :) youtube.com/watch?v=R3pacxaX…

So a few people have been asking me if I would do other games after Encounter, and the answer is yes. The first one would be to finish Quantum Fx and make it into an actual (free) game with gameplay that's fun to play, instead of a tech demo. ⤵️ youtube.com/watch?v=0sC1kWvb…

I have a few ideas, they need to be fleshed out, but I think that could be an interesting game to play, and if it looks like there's potential, that one will also make it to Steam: If Encounter managed to pay back the $100 fee, I'm confident a dungeon crawler game can as well!⤵️

And if I somehow manage to finish this game and release it, that will make me enter to the very select club of indie developers who managed to finish more than one game! 😅

Finally uploaded my version 1.0 of my entry for the Nova demoparty. 🥳 Xeron and h0ffman have been doing second place three years in a row, hopefully my entry will not do any worse!

At that rhythm I'll probably not reach 50 reviews before it's time to enjoy my retirement... but every single one of these small positive reviews make me happy. Thanks!

And done optimizing for today. In red is yesterday's first profile before I started digging in the code, and in green it's the results after having seriously hacked in the IRQ handler. About 8.7% improvement, that's not too bad :) (and yes, I've adjusted some demo timings)

With proper feet, it should probably be possible to transform this brick into a an expansion for the Oric with integrated power-brick, volume control, joystick ports, loci, and have the external ports connected to a USB hub.🤔

So I spent a bit of time optimizing the IRQ handler and the Arkos tracker routine, then I ran the profiler before and after, then compared the frame time. Gain is about 5% of frame time :) Oric data science! 😅 Next step, identify and kill the spikes.

I was joking with a colleague the other day about my Oric game, saying that it may sell for years and years, because it's looking as retro as it will ever been, it can't ever end up looking more retro😅
Metal Slug turned 30 this year. It has aged incredibly gracefully; and I think the main reason is its pixel graphic style. Unlike early 90s vector graphics, ray tracing, or hyper-realistic styles, pixel art ages much better. You could release Metal Slug today as an arcade game and it would still work perfectly. You can't say the same about the majority of games from three decades ago. Many, many coins went into this beauty back in the day…

10 days before Nova party: The demo is 99% done, means I've about 10 days for cleaning, polishing, optimizing, tweaking.

Ok, I did not realize it had been that long since I last made a serious Oric entry, "Oric Tech" was in 2015 and "ZeroFx" was in 2014, that's a decade ago!!! 😱

I'm using something similar for PictConv, I've generated a list of md5 of the converted images, saved in the revision control system, and when I make a new version I can regenerate this list and compare it with the existing one. github.com/Oric-Software-Dev…
been trying something new I have all my layouts as unit tests, but I also have them as real displays using raylib and writing out. I take all those images and save them to disk as "goldens" when I believe they are correct. Now i can 1. watch them all for visual sanity 2. save new ones for new goldens / additional goldens 3. use CI to test that i haven't ruined the real display

The demo is crashing on displaying a crash screen. Poetic justice 101!

Just found an original "Buggy Boy" on the local market, it's one of the few very good Atari ST adaptations from the arcade: The game looks good, sounds good, plays good! Recommended!

I had considered (briefly) adding a save system to Encounter, but reached the conclusion that would not bring any real benefit at all: The game is short and encourages experimentation, the cost of failure is not huge, a load/save system would just a be "another feature".
My hottest gaming take is that I actually dislike PC game save systems where you can just save/load wherever and whenever. It feels sort of like the equivalent of leaving a debug feature in a game, except it’s extremely normalized

Software has a natural tendency to get more complex over time, specially if you listen to all the user requests. I can't say I'm particularly proud of the interface of that tool, but it's been doing its job (mostly) for about 8 years now, with very little maintenance needs. 😅
