As a mother tells her daughter, violence is the language spoken here. And violence there is, mostly based on revenge. This is another generation of Chinese and Italian gang interaction. In order to appreciate the situation here, the first novel, Mayhem on Mulberry: Rise of the East must be read. DeFilippo's writing is engaging so do read the first novel before this one. Jen, part of the Chinese gang structure and a major character in the first book, is determined to take down the Italians once for all. She is so twisted in her anger she will use her own daughter to do so. While this carries on the action from the first novel, it is now a generation later. The violence seemed to be a little less and the sex in this book not as descriptive. Nonetheless, be prepared for gruesome fighting in the gang war. The body count is high. This novel seems to reveal the ultimate futility of it all. This is a good novel for readers who like ones diving deep into the characters stuck in the family gang structure and their desire to exact revenge. My rating: 4/5 stars. MY THOUGHTS ON THE BOOK: Mayhem on Mulberry: Book Two- Fall Of An Empire by Vincent deFilippo is the second book in the Mayhem on Mulberry series by the author. This book picks up where the last book ended, with our FMC, Jen Mo Li disappearing after her 'death' but many decades pass and now it is 2020 and she is back in NYC under a new name along with her daughter Julia. Jen has a plan to take down Enzo and the entire DeCarlo Mob after what they did to her. As with the last book I truly enjoy Jen as a character, she is relatable and also just really a deep character. The Italian mafia and the Chinese mob are still fighting in NYC, which makes this book super engaging for the reader. Nicky DeCarlo is Enzo and Jen's son and Jen makes Julia (Enzo and Jen's daughter) seduce her own brother! With more betrayal, secrets, and lies this book is a great continuation to the first book. I love that ending where Nicky gets what is coming to him, and Julia makes a big decision on her life and family in the ending of this book. It makes me want to read the next one in the series, as I am sure there should be:) I highly recommend this book to fans of mafia/mob stories and also really great written series in general!
