The Metamorphosis of Faith
Colossians 2: 1-10
In his sermon "The Metamorphosis of Faith" from Colossians 2:1-10, Rev. Dr. Perry Hanley explains how God fundamentally transforms lives, turning selfish, directionless people—driven from birth by the desires of the flesh, eyes, and pride of life (1 John 2:16)—into new creations filled with Christ. He contrasts the evident "works of the flesh" (Galatians 5), such as immorality, strife, jealousy, and conceit, with the fruit of the Spirit, highlighting humanity's innate self-centeredness that persists even when masked. At salvation, believers undergo a profound metamorphosis (like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly), as the fullness of deity in Christ fills and indwells them, crucifying the old self so that Christ lives through them. This internal transformation, empowered by the Holy Spirit who kills off unhealthy desires like purifying light, produces healthy relationships by shifting focus from demanding change in others to personal surrender and renewal. The pastor urges believers to invite Christ to take full control, praying for more of Him to cultivate authentic love, joy, peace, and purpose rather than striving in their own strength.
