Today, the Etowah County Jail (Etowah) in Alabama will once again begin detaining people in ICE custody, according to Sheriff Jonathon Horton.
gadsdentimes.com/story/news/…
People imprisoned in immigration detention at Etowah were subject to its harsh conditions, including zero access to outdoor recreation, inadequate medical & mental health care, barely edible food, & the longest average length of stay for people detained system-wide.
The Sheriff's decision to re-open Etowah for ICE is an about-face of the community and feeds into Trump’s massive immigration detention expansion plan, which will tear apart families, put people’s lives in danger, and cost taxpayers greatly. #communitiesnotcages#shutdownetowah

He is currently hospitalized and struggling to breathe.

Below text continues - "Instead of spending $37.5 billion more on the Pentagon and $43.75 billion more on deportations and detentions each year, we could provide: Affordable housing for the 3.6 million renters who receive an eviction notice each year, AND Housing security for the 653,000 Americans experiencing homelessness, AND Treatment for the 1 in 5 adults with opioid use disorder who have no health insurance, AND Healthcare for every one of the 4 million uninsured children in this country, AND Expand Head Start to serve 4 in 5 children in poverty - versus the current 1 in 3"

With the first flights arriving at Guantánamo Bay, it’s clear that Trump’s immigration detention expansion plan and use of Guantánamo Bay will tear apart families, put people’s lives in danger, and cost taxpayers greatly. theguardian.com/us-news/2025…
The U.S. military base is an embodiment of islamophobia, anti-Blackness, and xenophobia with a well-documented history of abuse and torture.
