Go Backend Security — The Big Picture Security isn't one thing. It's layers. Each one protects against a different attack. If one fails, the next should hold. Here's how it fits together: 1. The Edge — where requests enter TLS 1.2 , HTTP timeouts, rate limiting, request size limits, security headers, strict CORS. 2. Identity — who is this? JWT or OAuth2, bcrypt/Argon2 for passwords, short-lived tokens, constant-time comparison, secure cookies. 3. Authorization — what can they do? RBAC/ABAC, least privilege, per-endpoint checks, resource ownership validation. 4. Input Handling — trust nothing Validation with allow-lists, parameterized queries, path traversal protection, file upload limits. 5. Data — at rest and in motion TLS between services (mTLS), encryption at rest, crypto/rand, AES-GCM, KMS for keys, no hardcoded secrets. 6. Code & Dependencies — the supply chain govulncheck, gosec, golangci-lint, pinned deps, minimal imports, race detector in CI. 7. Runtime — where code lives Non-root user, distroless images, read-only filesystems, dropped capabilities, no debug endpoints in prod. 8. Observability — see the breach coming Structured logs, no PII or tokens in logs, security event tracking, alerts on anomalies. 9. Error Handling — don't help the attacker Generic errors to clients, full details internally. Never expose stack traces. The mistake most devs make? They obsess over one layer and ignore the rest. Perfect auth means nothing if your logs leak tokens. Perfect crypto means nothing if your container runs as root. Perfect input validation means nothing if your dependencies are 3 years old. Security in Go isn't about being paranoid. It's about being layered.
