Many commuters will benefit from this, which is good. But there's likely a significant extra cost on the City to getting this work accelerated, and perhaps better planning could have avoided it. Most importantly, we rarely, if ever, see this urgent action on transit.
I have some very good news to share about the 417. Unless the weather interferes, all lanes of the 417 near Pinecrest will reopen in just over a week, on Monday, June 22. That’s more than five weeks ahead of the original timetable. I know how frustrating it’s been for drivers in the west end due to lane closures and construction. I asked for the project to be significantly accelerated so we could reduce disruption and get relief for commuters as quickly as possible. I’m pleased to see staff have followed through on my request. To accelerate the work, there will be some overnight lane reductions next weekend. These are the final steps necessary to get the work done. If the weather is a factor, the work may be delayed to the following weekend but so far it’s looking good. Thanks for your patience. We’re almost there!

I plan to attend the campaign launches of all 4 mayoral candidates, starting with Jeff Leiper's launch tonight, then Neil Saravanamuttoo's on May 4, Alex Lawson's on May 23, and Sutcliffe's when it's announced. I'm eager to hear how the 4 contenders for Mayor present themselves.

This is a great example of councillor-led projects, and the impact that municipal representatives can have on their ward, and our city. Glad to see Mayor Sutcliffe backing my colleague @Jessica_Ottawa’s efforts. She’s been working on this for a while.
We are saying yes to housing in Ottawa. That means yes to more affordable homes, and yes to working with all levels of government and community partners to get projects built. @OCH_LCO has a new project in Heatherington, with 90 new affordable rental homes coming to this site as part of a strong #TeamOttawa. Thank you to Councillors @Jessica_Ottawa and @tm_kavanagh, and MPP @GeorgesDarouze, for being there and supporting this important work.

Let me know if you're power is out in Ward 9. There was a large outage across many pockets of the west part of the ward (Trend Arlington, Craig Henry, Manordale, Tanglewood) but in my own neighborhood, it came back on in less than 10 minutes.

It appears that power has been restored to MOST of the Tanglewood area, and much sooner than anticipated. This is great. However, power still appears to be out at the apartment building at 100 Medhurst, affecting approximately 100 customers. If anyone can confirm this, please do.
POWER RESTORED: Power has been restored to most customers impacted by the outage in MEDHURST, BENLEA, WOODFIELD, and MERIVALE. Thank you for your patience. #OttawaOutage @DevineSean @laine_johnson1 If your power is still out, make sure to report it: hydroottawa.com/outagecentre COURANT RÉTABLI: Le courant a été rétabli pour la plupart des clients touchés par la panne, causée par le mauvais temps dans les quartiers MEDHURST, BENLEA, WOODFIELD, et MERIVALE. Nous vous remercions de votre patience.

All I can say to @OttFire is thank you so much for being able to attend to this as quickly and as effectively as you did. Those two drivers are both fortunate to be alive, due to the skill and dedication of our excellent firefighters.
Firefighters completed a double extrication this morning following a serious two-vehicle collision on Prince of Wales Drive. At approximately 08:51, the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a request from our partners at the Ottawa Police Service to respond to the 2200 block of Prince of Wales Drive for reports of a head-on collision involving two vehicles, with occupants trapped. Upon arrival, Firefighters confirmed a serious collision involving two vehicles that had sustained extensive damage. The vehicles were located approximately 150 feet apart, with the drivers of both vehicles trapped inside. As a precaution, crews advanced a hose line and worked alongside Ottawa Police as the roadway was shut down to allow safe operations. Firefighters stabilized both vehicles and began simultaneous extrication efforts. Using specialized hydraulic rescue tools, crews safely extricated the first driver at 09:05. The second trapped driver was successfully extricated at 09:20. This involved removing the driver’s side door and performing a dash roll, a technique used to lift and pivot the vehicle’s dashboard away from the driver’s legs to free them safely. Firefighters de-energized both vehicles before clearing the scene. The scene was left in the control of the Ottawa Police Service for further investigation. #OttNews

We are expecting 10 - 15 cm of snow overnight. A winter weather parking ban will be in effect starting tomorrow, January 11 from 10 am until 7 pm. When vehicles are removed from our streets, our crews can clear snow efficiently. For more info: bit.ly/3NbOPFS

There are multiple large power outages across the city, no doubt due to the high-velocity winds. In Ward 9 the worst outage is in Tanglewood, with estimated restoration time of 3AM. With this many outages, I don’t expect to hear much in terms of updates.

At 75 km/h, the wind is strong enough to damage structures. At 90 km/h it can uproot entire trees. Winds will strengthen and suddenly shift to the west late this afternoon or early this evening as a cold front passes, with a brief gust to 90 km/h possible. 2/

It's our 1st newsletter of 2026. We take a quick trip back to the end of 2025 to speak about ending that year on a high note. Then we get into the meaty question: how can government to meet the needs of the people it serves? That, and a whole lot more! seandevine.ca/january_6_2026…

In terms of last night's #OnStorm, there were no power outages reported yet for Ottawa, and ice accumulation wasn't as heavy as expected. But we're still in for a day of heavier-than-usual winds, with gusts up to 70km/hr. Keep your devices charged!

Media covered our GOOD NEWS story: an example of how a small improvement can make a big difference. Still LOTS to fix with @OC_Transpo but yesterday life got a little bit easier for some of Ottawa's most vulnerable residents. Here's CTV's coverage. 1/ ctvnews.ca/ottawa/article/re…

And on CBC, Sadaqa Food Bank client Zak Khire talks about what it was like to lose weekend service for Route 189 and how happy he is to get it back. Sometimes the best policy comes from placing yourself exactly where the policy meets the pavement. cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/we…

It was an honour to join Rabbi Moshe Caytek at the Jewish Centre for Wellington West for tonight’s lighting of the menorah, on the 8th night of Hanukkah. Glad to be joined by my colleague @LeiperOttawa, who spoke eloquently about the courage of the Jewish community.

In our latest Ward 9 Newsletter, I've got a couple heartwarming stories about some "problem solving" I did with @OC_Transpo. This first story is about how I worked with Sadaqa Food Bank to address a major problem they were experiencing. 1/ youtu.be/Np0ZeVEcGkA?si=ksdJ…

Chesterton Drive is a collector road that has 2 parks, a public pool, 3 schools, Ottawa Community Housing. Before "New Ways to Bus", Route 111 served Chesterton 7 days/wk. Now, the 189 is the only bus on Chesterton, but only ran Mon-Fri. Now, they get weekend service, too! 8/

It was a joy to bring this news to Sadaqa. Yes, there are still major issues with Ottawa transit, but this small change will help people. Maybe that's the path forward: many small changes, one story at a time. I want to thank @OC_Transpo for listening. We got the bus back!
