Also true for the American language
Fun fact: The European language does not have a word for "freedom"

Puzzled why the mystery of the computational complexity of matrix multiplication does not get more attention. Way easier to understand than P vs NP and utterly surprising that there is even a question open here. Also, the math you get into once you start with it is wild!

Expertise? Bring sie ein! 👉 d486.keyingress.de/?i_survey…

We've lost an absolute giant today. RIP Dimitri Bertsekas. His probability and optimization books got me through my masters. Massive loss for the MIT community and the field.

I noticed that LLMs already affect student presentations a lot, but now at #SIAMOP26 I realize that also here, people use ChatGPT et al. to produce their slides (at least, that's the obvious explanation for all the "Why this matters" boxes I see on slides...)

Agreed - but if you look for a field that teaches you to understand new things go for the real thing and just study math
Good education has never been more important than it is now. With AI, *what* you know matters less. Whether you can figure out and understand new stuff is totally essential. Degrees like econ that teach you to think analytically about new problems are worth more than ever.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Cleve Moler, co-founder of MathWorks and original author of MATLAB, on May 20, 2026. A SIAM President and Fellow, Cleve was an icon and leader who helped shape generations and advance applied mathematics: mathworks.com/company/aboutu…

In the past some pretentious scientists used to say "I don't read papers, I write papers." and now I learn that today scientists don't even dare to read their own papers they didn't even write.

The job of "computer" has been replaced by the job of "programmer". The job of "mathematician" will be replaced by the job "..."?
This feels crazy to say, but much like "computer" used to a job done by humans, we might be witnessing the last generation of mathematicians

That's basically von Neumann's convergence result for the method of alternating projections onto two subspaces. I wouldn't call this "folklore"...
A kind of folklore theorem. If P is orthogonal projection onto a subspace M, and Q is orthogonal projection onto a subspace N, then the orthogonal projection R onto the intersection M ∩ N can be written as a simple limit of powers of PQ. #math #algebra

The exponential function has the remarkable property that it is the unique function f that satisfies the differential equation f'(x) = exp(x) with initial value f(0)=1.
