Got asked me why I don’t stick to tweeting about psychiatry and mental health recently
As mental health professionals and doctors, it’s our duty to speak out against all the factors that contribute to mental illness - including poverty, racism and policies that perpetuate them.

Sadly my father passed away on 19 May. He was a kind, calm, funny, helpful man who I looked up to.
He’d always try to do the right thing. My love for music and travelling came from him.

Wildly misleading.
Lithium is clearly effective in the treatment of bipolar disorder, especially mania: pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article…
It does have significant side effects, which I discuss (along with other options) when considering it, so patients can make an informed decision.
Psychiatrists love lithium because it is believed to be a truly targeted treatment that justifies the whole edifice of medical diagnosis. It is nothing of the sort. It is a toxic substance that suppresses nervous system activity but is too toxic to be useful as a sedative.
Its prophylactic properties have been exaggerated because it induces mania on withdrawal. Several studies show you have a higher risk of having an episode of bipolar disorder after stopping lithium than before starting it. And it does not prevent suicide, as we showed in our systematic review (Nabi et al, 2022) and has been confirmed by others.
Lithium's toxicity and lack of utility was recognised back in the 1960s and 70s, but the allure of a supposedly specific treatment overcame any sensible discussion about it. cambridge.org/core/journals/…
