If you are a leader or mentor, it’s important to remember that each person you lead and mentor is different, and none of them are a replica of you.

The impact (good or bad) that you have on people through your teaching and mentoring will likely be greater than the impact of your research on society.
What unpopular academia opinion would get you in this situation?

We spend millions to implement research based practices. BUT, we ignore the extensive research that shows how play, recess, & physical activity, can improve focus, self regulation, and on task behavior, as well as academic achievement, interpersonal skills & mental health.

I don’t know where the idea came from that being mean to people in your research group will lead to higher productivity, but it needs to end. Not only is this unethical, but it is also ineffective. The best research happens when people are supported and treated with kindness.

Your first draft doesn’t define you as a writer. Neither does your second, third, or twenty-seventh draft. What matters is how you grow and develop and hone your creativity and form over time. We are all a work in progress.

These days I hear many from academic circles talking about grants, patents, companies, business plans, more grants, needing postdocs and other subordinates to do their research, administration, no teaching, running places, becoming β€œleaders”…. What about education? Scholarship?
