The Alister MacKenzie Institute is pleased to announce our newest publication, a Limited Edition reproduction of Dr. MacKenzie’s first book Golf Architecture: Economy in Course Construction and Green-keeping, published in 1920. Original copies of Golf Architecture are extremely rare, so we’d like to give MacKenzie fans the opportunity to own an authentic reproduction (not a facsimile). Never before has this seminal book by Golf’s preeminent architect been authentically reproduced. We have undertaken a meticulous process of recreating this book in its original form as precisely as possible, using the highest quality materials and production methodologies. From manually typesetting the entirety of the manuscript, to high-resolution image reproduction, to paper sourcing — no stone has been left unturned in our effort to create a reproduction that Dr. MacKenzie would be proud of. A limited production of 1,000 copies, complete with elegant slipcase and commemorative Letterpress card, will be released August 30th, and is available now for pre-order [LINK IN BIO]. We hope you all will enjoy this unique publication as much as we’ve enjoyed creating it.

Every Hole at Augusta National - No. 11 (White Dogwood) No. 11 is simply a brute, often playing as the most difficult hole to par at Augusta National. It’s also been one of the most frequently tinkered-with holes at Augusta National.

Every Hole at Augusta National - No. 10 (Camellia) The 10th hole kicks off the back half of the round in hair-raising fashion, plunging 100 feet into a valley shrouded by tall pines. Perry Maxwell’s 1938 transformation of “Camellia” is one of the rare cases in which a change to MacKenzie and Jones’s design represented a substantial improvement.

Every Hole at Augusta National - No. 9 (Carolina Cherry) The ninth hole plays from a high point near the first and eighth greens, down through a valley frequently used by galleries, and up the hill where the clubhouse sits. From a risk-reward perspective, “Carolina Cherry” is a bit of a muddle.

Every Hole at Augusta National - No. 8 (Yellow Jasmine) “Yellow Jasmine” is the most underrated hole at Augusta National. This uphill three-shotter consistently produces the highest scoring average of Augusta National’s four par 5s, but it still presents a welcome birdie opportunity after the tough stretch of Nos. 4-7.

Every Hole at Augusta National - No. 7 (Pampas) Yes, the green contours are fun, but “Pampas” has morphed into something that Alister MacKenzie likely would not endorse: a hole that merely defends itself through length and narrowness rather than asking complex strategic questions.

Every Hole at Augusta National - No. 6 (Juniper) “Juniper” is, in our opinion, Augusta National’s second-best par 3. Each pin position presents a different range of challenges and exciting possible outcomes.

New Designing Golf today! It's all about the original design at Augusta National. Two segments: 1) An explanation, assisted by @DoctorMacKenzie, of how Alister MacKenzie and Bobby Jones adapted template concepts at ANGC (specifically Eden, Road, and Redan). 2) A conversation with one of today's most exciting golf architects, @bschneider126, about how 1930s Augusta inspires his work. Had a lot of fun putting this episode together. Check it out: open.spotify.com/episode/5Bs…

Every Hole at Augusta National - No. 5 (Magnolia) “Magnolia” is like Paul Thomas Anderson’s film of the same name: brilliant, probably underrated, but a tad bloated. Nonetheless, the hole presents an honest challenge, and the green is one of the most artfully shaped at Augusta National (or anywhere else).

Every Hole at Augusta National - No. 3 (Flowering Peach) The most strategically complex hole on the golf course, “Flowering Peach” has stood the test of time, less affected by distance gains than most holes at Augusta National.

Everything good about golf architecture lives at Dr. Alister MacKenzie’s Royal Melbourne (West). Highest order on the 147 Custodians and for good reason—it’s what everyone should strive for, with the par 3, 5th among the notable holes on property.
