The claim "This isn't D&D" is false. The Dungeon Master's Guide explicitly permits DMs to "use dice as rarely as possible... the DM decides whether an action or a plan succeeds or fails based on how well the players make their case, how thorough or creative they are..."

Sir respectfully, I'm a huge nerd - I've worked in video games, comics, animation and helped develop board games. I was mostly mute through high school and had stunted social skills.
I only learned to become confident articulating myself verbally through practicing by streaming.
