Before Zohran won & Eric was saying moderation was key, @perrybaconjr summarized the Bonica-Grumbach thesis: 1 Be interesting w/ media 2 Run against establishment/wealthy 3 Recruit candidates on vibes, not moderation or fundraising 4 Focus on low trust/young Welcome Eric!

Zohran was an unusual Democratic candidate, in that he was good at speaking off-the-cuff about his agenda to a wide variety of different audiences. It would go against the party's recent playbook, but Democrats should consider nominating someone who is good at talking in 2028

NEW: UAW Calls on Michigan Legislature to Deliver for Working Class People in Lame Duck Session The UAW issued the following statement today calling on the Michigan legislature to deliver for working class people in the upcoming lame duck session: The UAW is the state’s largest union, with over 300,000 active and retired members in Michigan. For too long, corporations and the rich have taken more of the wealth we’ve created for themselves. They’ve rigged the rules of our politics and pitted working-class people against one another by telling us there isn’t enough for everyone. That must end. In the final days of the Democratic trifecta, we are calling on the legislature to show up and fight for working class people. Michigan’s lawmakers can fight for the working class or do the bidding of corporations and big donors, but they can’t do both. It’s time to pick a side. We must go on offense for living wages, health care, retirement with dignity, and time with our families. We must defend against corporate greed and divide and conquer politics. In the lame duck session, we are expecting action from our legislators, and we will be watching closely. Who stands with the working class on our core issues, and who stands with corporate interests? In the coming days, the UAW will be demanding action on important legislation that makes life better for working people and our families and that protects our rights and communities from harm. We need our leaders to fight for the working class all over this country, but it starts here in Michigan, the birthplace of the UAW.

This debate about the role of non-profit interest groups and Dems is missing the point. It’s a symptom of a much larger problem—hollowed out politics. The Dem side political practice (often driven by donor advisors/firms) abdicates actual politics in favor of the *appearance* of it. Constant polling, obsessive RCTs on field tactics, treating voters as consumers. Media is very important, but can’t cover for weak organization and alienated bases. Alternative? 🧵

Could not agree more with @AJentleson here: “In politics, winning elections is the moral imperative. You go into this business to change people’s lives for the better. That means changing policy, and to change policy you have to win. Those who would rather lose elections so that they can feel better about themselves leave the real suffering to the people they claim to fight for. No one wins when we lose. It is time to start winning again.”

In order to vote in his first election, my father paid a poll tax. My dad. Not my great great grandfather, my father. He is very much still alive. He voted today. No poll tax required. I am so proud to his daughter.
Something to ponder as you head out to vote today, for free. In the Library's Rosa Parks Papers collection, there's a receipt for the poll tax she had to pay to vote in Alabama in 1956. Poll taxes, a Jim Crow-era voter suppression tool, were not abolished federally until 1964.
