I was aware of The Backrooms as an internet phenomenon. Years ago, when it first became popular, I watched some of the YouTube videos.
I didn't really see how they could make it into a movie. But I kept hearing it was good, and I know my older kids are into SCPs and SCP-adjacent stuff, so I asked if they wanted to see it.
We went last night. It was really, really good.
I'm not a horror movie guy. At all. It wasn't gore-free, but it wasn't gory either. It was just incredibly suspenseful.
If you're into high concept, high strangeness stuff at all -- mindbending fiction that makes you question reality for a minute -- it's worth your time.
The performances are excellent. The writing is tight. The pacing is relentless. And it makes maximal use of the idea that what you *can't* see or make sense of is often far more terrifying than what you can.
