"Though I am an entomologist, I did not realize that insects were "the little things that run the world" until Wilson explained why this is so in 1987."

E.O. Wilson was an extraordinary scholar in every sense of the word. @UDelaware's Doug Tallamy paid tribute to the late biologist, who was the first to understand the evolutionary basis of both animal and human societies. salon.com/2021/12/30/eo-wils…#UDel#Entomology#Sustainability

"...even the most generalized insects, at least in the United States, can eat only 14 percent of the plant lineages that are available to it. So even a generalist is excluded from 86 percent of the plants that are out there."

"First and foremost, we must landscape with plants that support local food webs, for it is the transfer of energy from plants to animals that enables the animals that run our ecosystems to exist." x.com/HNPontheMap/status/152…
Nonnative plants are EVERYWHERE & not just invasive. We must understand their impacts on insect decline & their interactive/additive impacts with other population stressors like artificial light and climate change
fun to put this together with #dougtallamy and @Calosoma_amitch!
Here's the whole comic, feel free to share! & link to the OA paper. We hope this sparks new conversations about the nuance & importance of plant species identity even among #nativeplants, and is also helpful for anyone doing on-the-ground restoration. nature.com/articles/s41467-0…
