Counseling isn’t so much about helping someone move from Point A to Point B as it is helping them see the story that got them to Point A and the slow and deep journey it takes to get to Point B.

As a younger man, I valued and admired those who had the gift of speaking, but as I’ve gotten older I’m more encouraged by and appreciate those who excel in the art of listening. The gift of genuine presence is sorely needed in our world today.

When we experience trials of various kinds, God is doing more than just conforming us to Jesus. He’s bringing us into closer communion with Jesus. The emphasis is not mainly on a lesson to learn more thoroughly—but a Person to know more deeply.

It’s not wrong to want daily bread; in fact, we should pray for it. What’s wrong is when we want it in bulk and we want it on our terms, not God’s. Like the Israelites, God is testing our hearts to depend on him to give us what we need when we need it.

Jesus is not just there to help you cope but to call you to change. And this, too, is a grace.

“It’s only in the mirror of God’s Word that we see ourselves accurately, and only by his grace that we find help for what we see.” -Paul Tripp I would also add that the we cannot see ourselves rightly in isolation. We need community to see and be sanctified.

Walking by faith means you might not see what's in front of you, but you can see the faithfulness of God behind you and the greatness of God ahead of you, and you're confident He's with you leading the way.

The essential lesson Jesus kept teaching his disciples was to rely on him. Whether you’re the confident type who tends to think you can do it on your own, or the timid type who thinks he can’t to do it at all, Jesus says, “Rely on me as we do it together.”

Incredible…He never stops rejoicing in doing us good! “I will make with them an everlasting covenant, that I will never stop doing them good...I will put the fear of me in their hearts…I will rejoice in doing them good…” -Jer. 32:40-41

C.S. Lewis once encouraged someone in their faith to "continue seeking with cheerful serious-ness," knowing that unless God "wanted you, you would not be wanting Him." -from the Collected Letters of Lewis. Pondering the phrase "cheerful seriousness" today.

Jesus’ invitation to Peter to join him for breakfast is a remarkable reminder that shame never has the last word in our stories of failure. He pursues us, welcomes us back, and changes the narrative from shame to acceptance, from failure to honor. Hallelujah!

Weary one who struggles with shame and self-contempt: Lift up your chin and fix your gaze on the tender eyes of your Heavenly Father who looks at you with honor and delight. He cannot love you more; he will not love you less. You are His beloved child.

There are key moments in your life where people showed up for you and supported you when you needed it most. Those moments and those people are forever tied to your story because God’s comfort came through them in tangible and meaningful ways.

He rescued me, because he delighted in me. -Ps. 18:19 God has rescued us ultimately and continues to rescue us daily. Think about a recent time he has rescued you. And remember Jesus himself prayed this too. Enter into the Father’s delight with him.
