Counseling isn’t so much about helping someone move from Point A to Point B as it is helping them see the story that got them to Point A and the slow and deep journey it takes to get to Point B.

As a younger man, I valued and admired those who had the gift of speaking, but as I’ve gotten older I’m more encouraged by and appreciate those who excel in the art of listening. The gift of genuine presence is sorely needed in our world today.

When we experience trials of various kinds, God is doing more than just conforming us to Jesus. He’s bringing us into closer communion with Jesus. The emphasis is not mainly on a lesson to learn more thoroughly—but a Person to know more deeply.

It’s not wrong to want daily bread; in fact, we should pray for it. What’s wrong is when we want it in bulk and we want it on our terms, not God’s. Like the Israelites, God is testing our hearts to depend on him to give us what we need when we need it.

I would also add that the we cannot see ourselves rightly in isolation. We need community to see and be sanctified.
