⚔️ Gameplay
Downstream is an onchain world made up of hexagonal tiles that host three main resources (red, blue, and green goo representing attack, defense, and life).
Players move around the world, collect resources (goo), craft items, build and attack other players’ buildings, or interact with others’ creations.
Goo is the building block of the world. It’s a composable resource that players build on top of. Every user-created smart contract extends the the game’s functionality. For example, someone could create a factory that combines 25 red goo and 25 blue goo to output a shield. Then someone else could create another building that takes the shield and 10 green go to turn it into a stronger shield.

Downstream provides a sandbox for players to create their own experiences in a shared world within a given rule set (digital physics): player movement, properties system (attack, defense, life), combat system, and building system. As everything is permissionlessly composable, one can create a MOBA, a puzzle game, or a treasure hunt using multiple existing systems together with their own creations.

🧠 Team
@playmintUK, the team behind Downstream, consists of 14 game industry veterans who have been building video games since the 90s. First, the team experimented with “The Crypt”, a proof-of-concept game utilizing Loot NFTs. After raising a seed round from Bitkraft, 1kx, and others, they started to work on Downstream with the goal of creating a truly extendable MMO with composability at the center.
Currently, Playmint is part of the London cohort of a16z’s crypto startup school
“If that sounds like mods, then a fundamental difference is that mods fracture the experience for players, i.e. different players end up with different experiences. An autonomous world has players introducing new experiences and functionality in a single, shared world. The world, like our human world, evolves as players add new things they want to see.” - David Amor, CEO of Playmint

🔮 Next up
Downstream will launch a pre-alpha version on Redstone on May 1st, allowing anyone to create a game using Playmint’s low-code and no-code tooling and invite other people to play it
Here's the Building Configurator in Downstream.
People have asked me how you deploy a smart contract that extends Downstream without needing programmer knowledge. Here's an example of a factory. The code in the .sol can be modified to do fancier things, should you like.
