Been going down a bit of a rabbit hole looking at sports injury from a dynamical systems perspective. Why does an innocuous action you have executed 1000’s of times (eg throwing a pitch) cause an injury this time and can we predict it? pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2967…

The question is not so much the 'what' but the 'how' (ie, how do these factors impact on performance). The answer is they alter the organisation and interaction of the DOF at different levels of analysis, most notably at the behavioural level sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

FACTORS THAT CAN IMPACT PERFORMANCE v4 I’ve split this into acute & chronic, and consider a wide range of “performance” - from endurance & ultra, to team sports & very short duration events.

I learned this the hard way...! Most coaches & athletes don't care about the fancy analysis you used or the mechanisms activated... They mainly want to know how much something helps them.

Perhaps an external focus of attention isn't necessarily superior for performance-related outcomes? Very interesting analysis of literature... sportrxiv.org/index.php/serv…

“Scanning” is the new buzz word in ⚽️ This has perpetuated a plethora of drills where players have to “check their shoulder” whilst passing in a prescribed sequence (back and forth, or a-b-c). Here is a short thread explaining why this doesn’t work IMO 👇
