There has been an explosion in imaging in medicine.
General surgeons used to make the diagnoses of appendicitis based on history, physical exam, labs and clinical judgement.
Now the surgeons need a CT to make the diagnoses of appendicitis for them.
Few patients get out of the ER without a CT.
But the residency spots for radiology didn't increase as quickly as the scans.
Add to this the explosion in the use of interventinal radiology and you have a real crisis.
