Among all the nurdles and microplastics on the strandline, a tiny red Lego flower, one of 161,264 red Lego flowers lost overboard from the Tokio Express back in 1997. These originally came in sets of four, all attached to a central sprue (or doodah as beachcombers call them) but it's rare to find a complete set these days. Mostly beachcombers just find the individual flowers. Still turning up, 28 years on.

The gale force winds and high spring tides of recent weeks seem to have brought quite a bit of Lego from the 1997 cargo spill to the surface. This haul was found by Liutauras and his family while picking up plastic from Whitsand Bay in Cornwall over the weekend. These pieces have probably been buried in sand for decades rather than being adrift in the ocean all that time, giving an insight into how long plastic survives in the coastal environment. Many thanks to Liutauras and his family for giving us permission to share this photo.

These Lego flowers, still attached to their central sprue or 'doodah' as beachcombers call them, were found just before Christmas by ninibythesea at Saunton Sands in North Devon. There were 16,000 sets of yellow Lego flowers in the container that fell overboard from the Tokio Express in 1997 but it's rare to find them intact these days. Usually beachcombers just find the single flowers, or the sprues. Many thanks to ninibythesea for giving us permission to share her pictures. You can see more of her images over on instagram and Facebook. www.instagram/ninibythesea Picture credit: Ninibythesea/Janine Bannister
