Content warning: shocking ignorance about sign languages and deaf people in the post, the quote tweets, and comments. Right wingers punching down at inclusion is sadly not a new low.
It's absolutely nuts that the deaf are a like 1% of the population and get maybe a fifth of the screen. Don't we already have a closed caption option? Do we really need to be distracting everyone with someone waving their hands in the air?

Appalling to see so many deaf people having to explain that MAKATON IS NOT A SIGN LANGUAGE in #SignLanguageWeek Makaton are signs adapted from BSL (in a highly problematic way) used with spoken English. It's actually English with key word signing, not a real sign language.

I'm sorry to say this is a really bad idea. 1. Makaton is not a separate language. It is a form of sign supported English, using some BSL signs, taken without consulting the BSL community. 2. The creators of Makaton mistakenly believed that BSL was 'too hard' for some children.
I’ve started a petition to get Makaton recognised as a language in law. The first step in helping make it accessible for everyone as languages cannot be copyrighted or trademarked. #SEND #freemakaton #DownSyndrome petition.parliament.uk/petit…

We celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities alongside our partners in the international disability movement. We also recognize deaf people with disabilities, who are important parts of inclusive #deaf communities. "Nothing about us without" us is our motto.

This is the worst ad ever. Never say no to sign language. You are encouraging to deprive the deaf children of their language and access to education.

Because I'm blind, an airline is saying I have to sit alone. We booked side-by-side seats. But when they found out I'm blind, they separated us. They're claiming it's their policy 1/7 #RightsOnFlights

23% of deaf youth aren't in school or working. That's 10% more than the national average! NDC aims to understand why this is happening. Check out the video to learn what we found.
