Good for Carter! BAD for future academy athletes. Some find excellence in scholarship, medicine & athletics while cadets. Ask grads BG(ret) Pete Dawkins and former Surgeon Gen. LTG(ret) Nadja West who deferred & then served the nation with excellence. Let athletes do the same!

An update: ESPN has learned w/@TishaESPN that Wisconsin Congressman Mike Gallagher @MikeforWI introduced the amendment that's putting Andre Carter's draft status in flux. His office didn't return requests for comment. Here's Gallagher's reasoning via committee debate:

Outrageously unfair and disrespectful to Carter and those cadets who committed to serve. Now it appears “someone” made a repulsive back room deal to try to change the rules. Would love to know who that “someone” is so they can take responsibility and try to explain themself.

There’s a cruelty to what congress is doing here. Not allowing a cadet to postpone his service obligation to pursue the NFL not only crushes Andre Carter’s dream, it ignores the value a pro athlete can provide as an ambassador for the military. espn.com/college-football/st…
