We had to go back in the @DunbarLPP vault to find these pictures from 3-4 years ago. We had no idea that we were in the presence of the FIRST BLACK WOMAN SUPREME COURT JUSTICE! Congratulations to our Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown-Jackson! #StudentExposure@akinyelecalhoun
I look forward to seeing you at 5 pm on Monday, Dec. 15, for Bill of Rights Day, the premiere of student-created documentaries and exhibits, a panel with legal scholars, officials, and activists, followed by refreshments and a Q&A. HumanitiesDC sponsors this event.
On #HumanRightsDay, we commit to empowering students with dignity, justice, & equality. They learn rights, analyze injustices, and act to create safer communities. Human rights are daily responsibilities. Our scholars are future changemakers. #HumanRightsDay2025#KnowYourRights
I will be presenting at the NCSS conference this year! My session, titled "Democracy in Action: Equipping Students for Civic Engagement," is scheduled for Friday, December 5, from 9:00 to 9:55 AM at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. See you there!
In 1946 WWII veteran Maceo Snipes was shot in his back by the KKK the day after he became the first Black person to cast a vote in Taylor County, Georgia.
After he was shot, Mr. Snipes walked three miles to the hospital with his mother. For six hours doctors left him waiting and bleeding. By the time he was seen, he needed a blood transfusion. The doctors said the hospital had no “black blood.” Snipes died two days later.
This is why I will vote in every election. The day I stop voting is the day I stop breathing.
People died trying to vote.
Today was National Voter Registration Day. But guess what, you're in luck you can still register to vote. Grab your family members and friends.
Let’s go!

Today was great! We celebrated Constitution Day in our Con. Law classes, hosted a voter registration drive, & held a lunch session called "Know Your Rights," similar to a game. Thanks to the League of Women Voters & the National Council of Negro Women for their support.
In today's Constitutional Law class, we had a lively Socratic Seminar on the Preamble to the Constitution. We explored the question: Does "we the people" include Washington, D.C. residents without full Home Rule? Thanks to @StreetLawInc for facilitating the lesson's resources!
The first week of class was a success. We introduced our sophomores to our law academy's values through a board game and visited our gun violence memorial to show them how one idea can lead to meaningful change. Special thanks to Jhara B., Class of 2021, for the memorial concept.
We have updated our academy website in preparation for the 2025-2026 school year. You should definitely check us out. This is going to be an amazing school year. dunbarlpp.org
Thank you to the American Lawyers Alliance for this award. It was a privilege to receive it alongside such remarkable educators. Hearing that one student was inspired to consider teaching over law made me incredibly proud. This award is dedicated to all my students! I'm thankful.
Honored to serve as a @smithsonian Democray in Dialogue exchange facilitator! This fall, DC ATL students will explore John Lewis's legacy through object-based learning & civic action through a project Meggin Rossner & I called Sole Purpose: The #GoodTrouble Project.
Congratulations to three outstanding civic educators—We the People teacher Derrick J. Johnson, American Civic Education Teacher Award winner Shelina Warren, and We the People teacher Sam Ulmschneider— on being named 2025 Teachers of the Year by the American Lawyers Alliance!
We proudly coordinated the League of Women Voters to prepare graduation voter registration cards for our Dunbar Seniors. Today, these cards were distributed during graduation practice to encourage them to register and participate in our democracy. Change starts with them!
Today marks what would have been the 23rd birthday of our beloved academy president, Mr. Richard Bangura. In his memory, we will place flowers at his gravesite. It's hard to believe that 3 years have passed since we debuted the gun violence memorial, which we updated this year.
On a more positive note, we are proud to announce that Dunbar Senior Labiba Khan is the Richard Bangura Legacy Scholarship recipient, named in his honor. This ensures that his legacy continues.
Here are some pictures of our academy seniors presenting their Declaration Day projects. It’s a bittersweet moment, as many have been with us since 10th grade. We’re proud of their progress and excited to hear about their future plans.
“It took many years of vomiting up all the filth I'd been taught about myself, and half-believed, before I was able to walk on the Earth as though I had a right to be here." —James Baldwin
