I’m glad everyone is looking at CTLs (custody time limits). For me, the real story is not yet being seen. The real story are those people pleading guilty to things they *didn’t do* because waiting for trial will mean spending longer in custody than their sentence would ever be 👇🏼

Gutter journalism. #FakeLaw by The Sun and The Mail. A truly vile exploitation of a grieving widow to make dishonest and intellectually void attacks on legal aid and the rule of law. Here’s why it’s nonsense: [THREAD]

So with Coronavirus measures fully implemented in my office I’m now off to court, prison and the police station. Otherwise known as the Wild West of the Coronavirus!

I'm absolutely confident that if the general public knew what went on in the back offices of law firms, they'd be fascinated. There's a very rich vein of funny, sad and bizarre stories, with funny, sad and bizarre clients... and lawyers.

Just going through a statement in which the OIC has redacted the Defendant’s name and DOB! We wouldn’t want him knowing his own name and birthday now would we? #redactiongonemad

BREAKING: Three-and-a-half years, two extensions, seven defections, 21 deselections, three prime ministers, countless amendments, two prorogations, one Supreme Court judgement, 66 million Brits losing the will to live and we’re still at square one.

The “most serious violent and sexual offenders” are already not automatically released at the halfway stage of their sentences. They receive “Extended Determinate Sentences”, where they serve a minimum of 2/3 of their sentence and stay in prison until safe to release. #FakeLaw
For the most serious violent and sexual offenders, I’m announcing at Conservative Party Conference tomorrow this Government will abolish automatic early release at the halfway point. #cpc19

Whatever the precise reasons for the poor baby's death, that a mother should be left in the middle of the night to give birth in her prison cell, is utterly barbaric. theguardian.com/society/2019…

Seen elsewhere... good description of the state of politics today, although not sure aroused is the correct word.

The courts haven’t become more political. The government has become less legal.

If caught speeding today, use these words. ‘I have the highest regard for the police force, but I think their decision is wrong. Though I will respect it, what’s important now is that I get to my destination as quickly as possible.’

I personally, am really looking forward to reading the tweets of 8 million definitely legally qualified professionals with PhDs in constitutional law weighing in on this judgment today.

Here is something what I wrote for this month’s @CounselMagazine. It’s a letter to my pupil self, about the things I wish I’d been told when I started at the Criminal Bar. counselmagazine.co.uk/articl…

Have just got out of court to see that “take back control” is now officially “shut down our democratically elected Parliament so that a minority government led by an unelected Prime Minister can force through a nation-altering policy that nobody was ever asked to vote for”. Huh.
