ALT “The Default Is Just Going to Be Getting Misgendered”: Minority Stress Experiences Among Nonbinary Adults" by Em Matsuno, Nat L. Bricker, Elizabeth Savarese, Roger Mohr, Jr., and Kimberly F. Balsam. Published in Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity
ALT A team of nonbinary researchers interviewed 29 nonbinary people about their common experiences of stress.
We found nonbinary people experience unique stressors compared to other LGBTQ people.
We describe some of these unique stressors in the following slides
ALT Binary Normativity -defined as societal norms that imply that only two genders exist. Lark a 22 year old Native and Latinx nonbinary demi-girl states "“Having very gendered languages, rituals, holidays, clothing, and trying to make them work for me.”
ALT Misgendering- defined as referring to someone as the wrong gender. Androg, a 28 year old Black nonbinary person states, ""Being misgendered is a soul-crushing experience when I’m not able to compartmentalize people viewing me as my AGAB [assigned gender at birth]"
ALT Interpersonal Invalidation - defined as messages that nonbinary identities do not exist or that someone isn't "nonbinary enough". Sioban, a 52 year old white nonbinary person states, "“So far the most stressful thing about sharing has been getting people to accept it. They say things like ‘Oh you ARE a woman . . . lots of women are sporty/tomboys/etc.’”
ALT Burdening - defined as expecting nonbinary people to educate others and prove their identity. Noel, a 26 year old Asian nonbinary person states, "“Honestly, I don't want to defend my conception of my gender, and am very stressed when people consider it their prerogative to question me extensively.”
