Here’s our piece from Nabatieh in Southern Lebanon just hours before the ceasefire came into place. We were covering the funeral of one of four paramedics targeted and killed by an Israeli triple-tap strike the day before. At the nearby hospital where we were about to interview the head of the paramedic charity, who himself had lost his young son just three weeks before to an airstrike, we found ourselves pinned down as jets attacked targets around us. Extraordinarily, despite having just attended the funerals of their colleagues, the medics calmly put on their protective equipment and started to respond. #nabatieh #lebanon #c4news

🚨 SERIOUS COMPLAINT 🚨 I am formally and angrily calling out the Beijing Municipal Government and ByteDance – specifically their construction site at Lanjing Lijia. At 2 AM on a weekend, excavators are working nonstop. The site is barely 200–300 meters from my home. How are people supposed to sleep? I filed a complaint with 12345 before. Their official response was: “This is a key municipal infrastructure project. Legal working hours are 6 AM – 10 PM, including weekends and public holidays (May Day, etc.).” That already made me furious. But now – weekend, 2 AM – they’re digging like it’s noon. Totally unacceptable. I recorded a video and posted it on domestic social media. Then Xiaohongshu banned my account – my video is invisible to others. That tells me one thing: the Beijing government saw my post. They chose to silence me instead of fixing the problem. As of now, my 12345 complaint is still unanswered – zero response. I never wanted to take extreme measures. But you leave me no choice. --- #Beijing #ByteDance #NoisePollution #SilencingCitizens #LanjingLijia #12345 #RightToSleep

"My son, everybody loved him... even the rocks, the trees and the sun Thanks be to God, at least he died with his face intact, still beautiful like the full moon" ⬆️ The father of a young man, Moudi, killed in an Israeli strike in Tyre Am always astounded at the eloquence so many of the bereaved we meet can muster, amidst their pain Our latest report from southern Lebanon, where bloodshed continues even amidst talk of peace: @EP_Lawrence @Freddie_G7 @CharbelCherif @andygraham134

Really pretty shocking for people who follow Myanmar. Detentions of two very prominent voices. No evidence the detentions were connected or coordinated. But a chilling effect nonetheless on analysis / criticism of China’s growing role in Myanmar.

Heartbreaking: "Sometimes life is unfair" - Abdullah tells us standing in front of his sister's coffin It's a colossal understatement. His sister Mariam & elderly parents were killed in an Israeli strike on their home in southern Lebanon "Are you angry?" I ask... "Will anger bring her back?!" Even as the US / Iran look to be moving closer to an agreement, for now the conflict here is continuing We've been in historic city of Tyre, Israel has ordered the entire population to evacuate whilst it launches heavy airstrikes on the area From many of those we talked to who still remain, a sense of exhaustion despite their resilience Our full report here: @EP_Lawrence @Freddie_G7

NEW: China arrested a US citizen after Trump met with Xi in Beijing and accused him of endangering national security — a rare charge against an American. The detainee, U Min Zin, is a grad student at @UCBerkeley who researches Myanmar. This adds a new strain to US-China ties.

Beijing lectures about the importance of dialogue on every occasion, but abruptly cancelled two important diplomatic meetings with the EU this month. “Beijing appears to be trying to send a warning to the EU’s national leaders ahead of a European Council summit in Brussels next week”, where the EU leaders will discuss a tougher China policy. Excellent overview by Brussels’ best informed journalist on this issue

On the same platform, a former long-time Chinese foreign ministry staff member quickly deleted a post after it attracted online attention. It suggested Beijing was worried about EU legislative moves because they'd be difficult to negotiate away, unlike – say – US trade tariffs.

The Israeli military is extending its already sweeping forced displacement orders in Lebanon by telling residents in the Christian enclave of Tyre for the first time that their area is earmarked for attacks after claiming Hezbollah activity. The enclave has been spared strikes up until now. The Leb army investigated area last week and ruled out Hez presence 🧵

The two best statistics in the WSJ’s genuinely great article on North Korea’s economic boom: Pyongyang built more housing last year than LA. (Says something about CA housing dysfunction). North Korea assembled more cellphones than the USA. (Assuming the #s are true!)

Crazy that this is getting barely any coverage. This year’s European Press Prize was just awarded to an investigative report by the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant. It is entitled “What the Wounds Tell” and in it the journalists Maud Effting and Willem Feenstra document the cases of 114 children in Gaza under the age of 15 who were struck by a single bullet to the head or chest. Almost all of them died or were left severely disabled. They chose to document only the cases of boys and girls under the age of 15 (though often much younger: aged 3, 4 or 7) because these are children who can be immediately identified as such. “A single bullet in these parts of the body is a clear indication that these children were deliberately targeted“, the two journalists write. This is the article: volkskrant.nl/kijkverder/v/2…

BREAKING: China’s Ministry of Transport announced a “special maritime traffic law enforcement operation” in waters east of Taiwan on June 6, involving the Fujian and Guangdong Maritime Safety Administrations, East China Sea Navigation Service Center, and East China Sea Rescue Bureau. Beijing framed the operation as an effort to exercise maritime administrative jurisdiction, strengthen distant-sea patrols, and protect “national rights and interests.” CCTV said the action was a response to Japan and the Philippines announcing maritime boundary talks east of Taiwan, which Beijing claimed infringed on China’s sovereignty and maritime rights.
