On the role of agroecological research in addresing market challenges for small-scale farmers, Jonathan Lubega the Policy Analyst for @SEATINIUGANDA emphasized the need for research to generate credible evidence on the economic benefits of agroecology. He also highlighted the importance of research in addressing the challenge of traceability for agroecological produce, noting that it could better support the identification of what is truly agroecological and what is not, thereby helping to strengthen agroecological markets. #AgroecologyNow| #ECOTOPIA2026

Happening Now: We are hosting a joint Agroecology Research Workshop under the Enabling Transformative Agroecology Programme (ECOTOPIA) implemented across Mayuge and Kumi districts, at Fairway Hotel, Kampala. The workshop follows a participatory mapping exercise conducted in May with 138 farmers on agroecological diversity in Eastern Uganda. Supported by HorizonT3000 and DKA Austria, it aims to develop a coherent, evidence-based research framework capable of measuring the scope of the agroecological transition, identify priority research gaps, and agree on a participatory research methodology. @dkaaustria @H3000EastAfrica #AgroecologyNow| #ECOTOPIA2026

Sir Bob Sunday George, the Agroecology Focal Person at @MAAIF_Uganda , underscored the importance of evidence-based advocacy, emphasizing that meaningful policy engagement must be backed by credible research and data. โ€œOur advocacy must be grounded in data; we need to ask ourselves whether we have enough evidence on agroecology. We need clear, compelling, and well-produced publications so that when we sit at the policy table, we have the data and evidence required to defend and advance certain agroecological policies and initiatives.โ€- he noted.

During the panel discussion, @ESAFFUG National Chairperson Hakim Baliraine emphasized the critical role that research can play in accelerating the agroecological transition, particularly in restoring soil health. "One of the most important areas this research can support in the agroecological transition is soil health. How can researchers help farmers understand which nutrients are missing from their soils? How can scientists enable farmers to know what to add in the soil, such as compost, green manure, and other agroecological practices?"

At #SB64 in Bonn, experts have warned that conflicts & fossil fuel dependence are exposing the fragility of industrial food systems. Our call is clear: decarbonize, defossilize & detoxify food systems through Agroecology, a path already embraced by millions of farmers worldwide.

On this #WorldFoodSafetyDay, we are reminded to ensure that whatever food we put on our plates is safe for our lives and well-being. Food safety risks such as aflatoxin contamination, unsafe chemical use, and poor post-harvest handling continue to affect public health, trade, and livelihoods. Addressing this requires a shift from response to prevention, strengthening food safety systems, investing in testing and post-harvest technologies, and improving coordination across institutions.
