Tonightโ€™s #MemorialCup Final marks the last assignment for Richard Trottier as the QMJHLโ€™s Director of Officiating, a position he has held for the past 16 seasons. A former referee in both our league and the @NHL, Richard is heading for a well-deserved retirement. Congratulations on a tremendous career and thank you for everything Richard! ๐Ÿ‘

Mtl-Buf too-many men. Player came on and got in the way of the puck carrier while his teammate was still on the ice. Correct call. Here is the applicable rule....

Icing is a judgment call, like so many others. I'm not going to change anyone's mind about the result. I'm just tired of reading posts and watching videos where people say, It's a race to the dot" At least get the rule interpretation correct if you're going to criticize.

Icing is not a race to the dots. Icing is a race to the puck, determined at the dots. 1st player to arrive at dot does not automatically win. Liney has to decide who will win the race to the puck, when first player gets to dot. The dot only initiates the decision-making process.

Too many men- PHL player comes off the bench and plays/stick-checks the puck carrier while the man he is replacing is still on the ice. Those saying "well, Carolina had 7 skaters" are misinterpreting the rule. It's all about getting an advantage which PHL did. CAR was making 1/

...a legal line change. A team might at some point, have 10 skaters on the ice at the same time but as long as everyone is 10' from the bench and no one deliberately plays the puck, then it's a legal line change. Also, puck was 100' from CAR bench...2/2

In other words, all the kvetching about how the ref couldn't possibly see the puck to call it a goal, and how that changed the standards for reviewing it, can quiet down. The NHL ruled it completely crossed the line. Even if the call was "no goal," they'd have overturned it.
NHL Situation Room on ANA OT winner vs. EDM: "The Refereeโ€™s initial call on the ice was that the puck completely crossed the goal line. Following video review, the Situation Room determined ***that the puck completely crossed the goal line.***" Not inconclusive. Conclusive.

I know this doesn't quite compete with a random Wikipedia reference but here is the rule. The stick and/or the player's shoulders must be above the waist of the player committing the infraction

In the NHL a player who loses his helmet may complete a play that he is engaged in. He does not need to immediately stop competing. Once the puck leaves his vicinity, then he must replace his helmet or proceed to the bench.

To clarify for Avs fans. The puck did not hit the official last night. You could see him shaking his head no and that's why the face off went back into the Colorado zone. The officials are pretty good about knowing the rules on face off locations.

Everyone has their hair on fire over a subjective ruling on offside. Let's admit that allowing a player to enter the zone before the puck is already granting an exception to the rule. If we are going to grant an exception to what should be a black and white rule,

then we need to accept that there is going to be a very narrow burden of proof required. A very specific standard that will need to be met or else we'll have players taking advantage of the exception. Give them an inch, they'll take a mile. Players need to demonstrate absolute

An offside review is intended SOLELY to provide relief from a goal scored after an offside entry, full-stop! All other infractions are still assessed. Picture a player entering the zone 15' offside, not scoring but drawing a delayed penalty shot. Everyone in the building saw...1/
