The American team has almost no experience in high-level international negotiation, no regional expertise on Ukraine and Russia, and no relevant foreign language knowledge. Not true of the Russians, to put it mildly.  Looks like a bloodbath by design.

Ich sage es mal so: Ich war immer äußerst skeptisch gegenüber der Idee, Deutschland oder die EU bräuchten eigene Atomwaffen. Aber ohne die USA halte ich das nukleare Abschreckungsdispositiv Frankreichs und des Vereinigten Königreichs nicht für ausreichend, um die gegenwärtige Sicherheit Europas ausreichend zu gewährleisten. Deshalb sind wir jetzt, denke ich, an einem Punkt, an dem sich eine Kosten-Nutzen-Analyse zumindest lohnt. Eine nukleare Aufrüstung Deutschlands und Europas wäre extrem teuer—finanziell, aber vor allem politisch. Darüber sollten wir uns keine Illusionen machen. Sie wäre auch hochriskant. Trotzdem sollten wir uns nun ernsthaft mit dem Wann und Wie befassen. Das würde zudem die Kalkulationen in Washington und Moskau komplizierter machen und es erschweren, Europa einfach zu ignorieren.
