Today, Africa lost a giant… and Amboseli lost its soul. 💔🐘 For those who didn’t know him, Craig was one of the last remaining great super Tuskers in Africa. A dominant, powerful elephant who roamed in the Amboseli National Park. His immense tusks were touched the earth, but his presence touched the hearts of people across the world. He was more than an elephant; he was a symbol of Africa’s wild spirit, resilience, and beauty. Those who were lucky enough to witness him in the wild will never forget the silence he commanded when he was roamed the park, was something that everyone who encountered him had never experienced before.

Craig, the legendary super tusker famed for its immense, ground-sweeping tusks and calm, dignified presence, passed on at the age of 54. Born in January 1972 to the great matriarch Cassandra of the CB family, Craig lived a life that few elephants ever do. Craig was one of the last remaining super tuskers in Africa - a rare class of bull elephants whose two tusks weigh over 45 kilograms (100 lbs) each. Fewer than a handful remain today, making him a living monument to Africa’s natural heritage. He fathered a number of calves, ensuring that his powerful bloodline and gentle character live on across generations. Beyond its extraordinary tusks, Craig was deeply loved for its remarkably calm nature. He appeared to understand its place in the world - often pausing patiently as visitors photographed and filmed him. Widely documented and admired globally, he became a true ambassador of Amboseli and a symbol of what successful conservation looks like. In 2021, Craig was proudly adopted by East African Breweries Limited (EABL) through the Tusker brand, reflecting his worldwide appeal. His long life and survival to such maturity were made possible through decades of dedicated protection by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), working in close collaboration with conservation partners and the local community. Continuous monitoring, anti-poaching efforts, habitat protection, and community stewardship ensured that Craig lived freely and safely - demonstrating what collective commitment to wildlife conservation can achieve. By decision of the President of the Republic of Türkiye, His Excellency Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, His Excellency Murat Kurum, Minister of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change, has been appointed as President of the 31st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP31). Moreover, it has also been decided in the official gazette that the conference will be held at the Antalya EXPO site. What are carbon credits? Moving onto to the next chapter of green and renewable energy, we introduce a market few are familiar with. Carbon credits are a permit or certificate that represents one metric ton of carbon dioxide (CO₂) either removed from the atmosphere or prevented from being released. Companies that produce pollution can buy these credits to balance out their emissions by funding projects like reforestation, renewable energy, or methane capture. The idea is to reduce total global pollution by making it costly to pollute while rewarding efforts that cut or absorb carbon. In simple terms, carbon credits turn pollution reduction into something that can be measured, traded, and improved over time.

At UNEA-7 in Nairobi this past week, President William Ruto reaffirmed the Assembly’s role as the world’s leading forum for collective environmental action. Coming after a challenging COP30 in Brazil, he noted that while expectations fell short, multilateralism held firm and the green transition remains irreversible. The President affirmed that the triple planetary crisis is already a lived reality in Africa. Kenya has declared a drought emergency affecting 20 counties, with 2.5M people at risk. Across the continent, extreme weather is driving hunger, displacement and annual economic losses of ~$150B - costs borne most by those who contributed least. He warned that rapid technological change, from AI to electrification, must not repeat old patterns of extraction. Africa intends to leap forward into a renewable, digital and climate-resilient economy, with UNEA setting the guardrails. He celebrated Africa’s growing leadership, Kenya’s conservation gains, and Nairobi’s upcoming global conferences on oceans and clean cooking. He also reiterated support for a strong plastics treaty and offered Nairobi as a venue for continued negotiations.
