🌍@Code4Africa, the @pulitzercenter, and @EarthGenome are launching Africa Mining Watch, a groundbreaking tool that leverages satellite imagery and artificial intelligence to detect mining operations across the African continent.
👉 To mark the occasion, twenty journalists were invited to take part in an exclusive online mapathon focused on West Africa and the Congo Basin, held on April 22, 2026.
🎙️@alexabdelilah, journalist at Forbidden Stories, explained how @EarthGenome's AI model helped map illegal gold mining in Ghana for our cross-border investigation “Toxic Gold” published with our partners @fourthestategh and @reporters_co.
Combining satellite imagery from 2024 and Earth Genome’s AI model, we were able to pinpoint the areas most affected by mining in southwest Ghana. The algorithm analyzed the distinctive patterns of artisanal mining operations, allowing us to identify nearly 150,000 hectares of mining sites — some located in protected areas.
