New NIHR data shows the UK has doubled the number of global and European first participants recruited into international commercial trials. This number has risen from 53 last year, to 100 this year. With faster set-up times and growing public participation, the UK is becoming a faster, more predictable and more competitive place to deliver clinical trials. Research breakthroughs only happen because people choose to take part. That’s why we ask everyone to sign up to Be Part of Research to help more people across the UK get involved in studies. The first ever clinical trial of medication for the long-term management of the condition commonly known as broken heart syndrome is now underway. Takotsubo cardiomyopathy affects more than 5,000 people in the UK each year and can be fatal in 1 in 10 cases. It is usually triggered by sudden emotional stress, such as the loss of a loved one. The NIHR-funded and supported study, led by @aberdeenuni, will take place at 40 hospitals across the country, with almost 1,000 takotsubo patients invited to take part.
