Omar Artan didn’t just make the #FIFAWorldCup, he made history as the first Somali referee to get there, and as #Africa’s best. That milestone stands no matter what. So sorry to see this, Omar. You reached the summit of your profession and inspired a generation back home just by getting there, and being kept off the pitch you earned doesn’t change that. This won’t be the end of your story on the world stage. The world stands with you as one family, wishing you resilience now and many more major finals to come. Solidarity. #Somalia
Somali referee Omar Artan, who was set to be the first from his country to officiate at the World Cup finals, has been denied entry to the United States.

BREAKING: The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has, in a landmark judgment, declared unlawful the National Assembly’s controversial N110 billion vehicle and allowance schemes, ruling that the spending of N40 billion on 465 vehicles for lawmakers and N70 billion in support allowances for newly elected members breached procurement laws, constitutional obligations and the public trust. The court also ordered the Senate President, Mr Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of House of Representatives, Mr Tajudeen Abbas to ensure that all future procurements or expenditure of public funds by the National Assembly comply strictly with due process requirements and are also guided by the principles of transparency, accountability and value for money. The judgment was delivered on Wednesday, May 6, 2026 by Justice Yellim Bogoro in Suit No. FHC/L/CS/1606/2023 brought by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) against the National Assembly. The certified true copy of the judgment was obtained last week. SERAP filed the lawsuit in August 2023 against Mr Akpabio and Mr Abbas, for themselves and on behalf of members of their respective chambers, following plans to spend N40 billion on 465 vehicles and N70 billion in allowances for new lawmakers amid worsening economic hardship across the country. In her judgment, Justice Bogoro held that: “Looking at the magnitude of the expenditure, coupled with the absence of demonstrable due process, leads me to conclude that the procurement is arbitrary, disproportionate and inconsistent with statutory procurement standards.” Justice Bogoro also held that: “The beneficiaries of the expenditure are the very officials approving it, and the expenditure confers direct pecuniary and material benefits. This to my mind constitutes a case of self-dealing and conflict of interest.” Read more: bit.ly/4e6JOId

Dear @OfficialDSSNG, 1st off, thank you very much for this statement. So, let's try & parse your narration a little. You admit you interdicted @OkeyNdibe on arrival at the #MMIA. The duration is immaterial. What matters is that for the duration that you had him, he could not exercise free movement. But that is beside the point for now. You say you are doing #WLAHygiene in respect of actions that go back to military rule. That ended 27 yrs ago. But you admit that Prof Ndibe was #watchlisted in 2013, which was 13 yrs after the return to civil rule. 14 yrs ago, Okey Ndibe was a professor, a writer, & a columnist. The other thing happening 14 yrs ago was the breakout of #BokoHaram into an insurgency & the onset of murderous terror on #Nigeria. 2013 was incidentally the year that the Tanimu Turaki SAN Committee on the security problems in Northern Nigeria submitted its report to @GEJonathan. 2 yrs earlier, the Gaji Galtimari Committee on the Boko Haram problem also did the same. Rather than prioritize the fight against those, you chose to watchlist a man whose entire goal & mission has always been to make the country better. What you need is more than #WLAHygiene. What you need is institutional hygiene. You may wish to take that even more seriously.
RE: ARREST OF PROFESSOR OKEY NDIBE- SETTING THE RECORDS STRAIGHT The Department of State Services (DSS) hereby clarifies that, it did not arrest or detain Prof Okey Ndibe at Murtala Muhammed International Airport on June 1, 2026 or any other place on that date for that matter. The current DG of the Service, upon assumption of duty, directed a review of old Watch-List Actions (WLAs), some of which date back to the Military Era. This is to ensure that citizens are not unduly embarrassed due to pre-existing WLAs. In this regard, all those who had previously been watchlisted while on transit, are routinely interfaced with as a prerequisite for a review and possible downgrade of the Action. This, being a precursor to a final delisting in accordance with international best practices. It is pertinent to state that the foregoing process is aimed at ensuring that before the final delisting, that activities, travel histories as well as current activities of these individuals are not in furtherance of and do not still conform with the reasons for the initial WLA. Suffice to point out that since the inception of the current Management , many Nigerians, including journalists have benefited from this process. This is despite the fact that the Service conducts this clearance to take care of Watch List requests from other Agencies. A case in point is that of Mr Lanre Arogundade, Executive Director of the International Press Centre, IPC, whose delisting was approved in May 2025, after over a decade on the Watchlist. In the same vein, Prof Ndibe has been on Watchlist since January 29, 2013. Meanwhile, his case has been reviewed and downgraded. Thus, the interface with him at the airport, was geared towards the final delisting of his details from the Action. As part of the routine interface involved in the process, after barely an hour of his interaction with the Service, he was cleared and escorted. Note that, even on his Facebook post, he referenced the professional, courteous and decorous conduct of Service operatives, who continue to scale their respect for the rule of law and human rights under the new Leadership. The Service reiterates that this process will continue to ensure that all Nigerians are fairly treated, with due regard to the provisions of the Law. The DSS therefore urges citizens affected by the Service WLA, who wish, to formally report same to the National Headquarters to facilitate ongoing process. However, regardless of any formal request, the attempt at hygiene regarding the WLA, will be sustained. Favour Dozie Deputy Director, Public Relations and Strategic Communications National Headquarters, State Services June 2, 2026

In the three years since Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office on May 29, 2023, journalists have been repeatedly arrested, attacked, and harassed — yet, the government has sought to deny this reality. 21 years ago, I sat in a prison cell and learned I was pregnant. Every sign pointed toward abortion. Every circumstance said this baby would never have a chance. But I chose life. I saw value in my daughter before anyone else could. What I didn’t know was that her birth would help change laws in America. Fifteen years after I gave birth while chained to a hospital bed with a sheriff standing watch, that story reached the highest levels of government. And @POTUS granted me a full and unconditional pardon and signed legislation ending the shackling of women during childbirth in federal prisons. Today, that same baby walked across the stage as a graduate of MIT. From a prison birth to one of the most prestigious universities in the world. Never let your circumstances determine someone’s worth. There is value in life. There is purpose in every child. Go, baby. The world is yours. ❤️🎓 #MIT #Graduation #ChooseLife #Redemption #SecondChances #ValueInLife
