The Edinburgh Geological Society is one of the UK’s foremost geological societies. We organise excursions and lectures for everyone interested in geology.
A huge thanks to the *3,650* people who signed our joint petition calling for the urgent reopening of Edinburgh's #RadicalRoad!🙏🏽
Our supporters included walkers, climbers, runners, geologists, civic leaders and leading health & safety experts!
Now @HistEnvScot, over to you...
ALT A pad lock with a warning sign and the over-growing path beyond
Lovely pic. But are they really 'plugs'?! Eroded volcanic areas always have loads of intrusions of different shapes and sizes. If it is circular (in map view) and not too big it gets called a plug and the assumption is there was a volcano above. But do we really know?
A great night, fascinating, entertaining talk and a inspiring conversation between @tomsharperocks @palaeokatie and @gsciencelady, chaired by Hermione Cockburn from @ourdynamicearth - all our palaeontologist panel started young, exploring local coal tips, beaches and hills.
What a great way to celebrate @GeodiversityDay
A fantastic talk by @tomsharperocks yesterday evening for the @EdinGeolSoc which was part of the @scottishgeology#ScotGeolFest23
The event was also attended by the @MaryAnningRocks statue maquette during her current road trip
ALT Two pairs of two people are standing facing the camera. To the left is a lady wearing a dark coloured dress with a pattern of small flowers. Around her neck is a rainbow lanyard. Next to her is a man with white hair and a beard wearing a mustard-coloured sweater and blue jeans. To the right is a man with white hair wearing a mid-blue jacket over a pale coloured shirt and pale blue jumper. Next to him is
a man hearing a pale green jacket and pale blue shirt. Between the pairs of people is a table and on the table is a perspex box containing a statue maquette of the Mary Anning statue, the full size version of which is on the seafront at Lyme Regis in Dorset. The people are standing in front of a cream background and on the wall is a poster describing the story of Mary Anning.
ALT A man is facing an audience of people standing behind a lectern giving a presentation. Above the man is a large screen showing a presentation slide with a picture of Mary Anning and a drawing of two extinct marine reptiles. One of the extinct reptiles has a long jaw with many long teeth similar in appearance to a modern day crocodile. The other extinct reptile has a very long thin neck and two front flippers and its neck is being bitten by the other reptile.
ALT An advertising poster for the Mary Anning Rocks Road Trip showing a stylised map of Great Britain with the towns and cities where the Mary Anning statue maquette will be travelling to and residing in 2023 and 2024 as it tours around country visiting museums and geological institutions. Great Britain is coloured in pale grey surrounded by pale blue and white sea. In the sea are cartoons of extinct marine reptiles. The road trip locations are listed on the left hand side in colourful blue, yellow, red and pink letters and the locations are marked on the map by logos of each institution
The 2023 EGS Public Lecture is on Fri (6th Oct 6:30pm) at Dynamic Earth: “Mary Anning & her Sea-Dragons” by Tom Sharpe.
After his talk, Tom will be joined by palaeontologists to answer questions & discuss Anning’s legacy & their journeys into palaeo.

The image depicts Dorset during the Jurassic and shows ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, pterosaurs, ammonites, belemnites and other creatures and plants, including defecating animals.
ALT Outcrops of Paleoproterozoic marbles, NW Scotland. (a) Marble layered with dark graphitic matter, below ironstone, Gott, Tiree. (b) Marble layered with silicate porphyroblasts and quartzite laminae, Bay Steinigie, South Harris (field width 1 m). (c) Lens of marble (with lens for scale) within bedded quartzites, Armadale. Historic Environment Scotland accused of "broken promises" after it said that “further reviews” were needed about access to the Radical Road on Arthur’s Seat.

Fantastic ☀️ day leading @EdinGeolSoc field traversing from Pease Bay to Cove
Beautiful rocks and always fun to share some geological knowledge with interested and engaging folk
Special thanks to @PhamieGow for the great pictures of some of sights on the trip
A perfect Hutton day! We are hosting a visit from the Leiden Geology Society, visiting Siccar Point (of course), the Hutton sculpture in Jedburgh and finishing at the @GreatTapestrySc

This follows on from our public lecture last night, where we learned about the fascinating story behind Hutton's brief stay in Leiden, where he gained his medical degree in 1749. Thanks to @StCeciliasHall for hosting us!
