Dear Video Editor, are you doing too much or too less? PRINCIPLES BEHIND VIDEO EDITING II Last time, I gave and explained 4 things you are doing wrong as an Editor but unaware of and gave ways you can correct it quickly. ⁍ But there’s more ☟
MORE OR LESS? : PRINCIPLES BEHIND VIDEO EDITING ⁍ Many times I see beginner video editors make the mistake of putting more for less and less for more when editing. At times, we as video editors may get caught up in our edits and forget the actual aim of edits in a bid to impress ourselves and show off our skill. ⁍ The main aim of editing, adding effects or even motion graphics is to make the viewers watch the videos for a longer period with understanding and to feel the emotion the video is meant to convey. There are principles that guide video edits. Breaking one or more of them leads to a BUSY/ROWDY video. So when making your next video, watch out for these ☟

➎ POOR SOUND DESIGN: You’ve discovered new sounds and their names but do you know how to use them properly? Any experienced editor will tell you that one of the most important parts of a video is the SOUND - and for this, you need to understand SOUND ENGINEERING. You use: - whooshes everywhere - Loud impact sounds - Competing background music The result - Audio fatigue happens faster than visual fatigue. To solve it - Use sound to emphasize key moments, not every moment and note that there are specific sounds to specific moments; hence understanding Sound Engineering. A tip here is that many professional editors use fewer sound effects than beginners expect. ➏ NO CLEAR HIERARCHY: - Large captions - Huge emojis - Animated arrows - Animated backgrounds all at the same time. The result - You just make everything seem important thereby making nothing really important. To solve this - Guide your viewer’s attention by using: • a main subject • supporting texts • background elements. ➐ EDITING FOR OTHER EDITORS: Many beginner editors edit to impress other editors instead of serving the viewers. Having your viewers in mind is important because you need to understand that most viewers don’t care about advanced masking, transitions or key frames. They just want to: • learn something • be entertained • and feel something. To solve - Edit for the audience, not for other editors.

By studying top edits, editors and brands, I’ve understood that they have a pattern - THEY REMOVE MORE THAN THEY ADD. Their workflow is often: - Build the story - Improve pacing (remember, humans have lower attention spans nowadays) - Improve clarity (there has to be a takeaway from your video) [VALUE] - Add emotion - Add effects only where necessary. So, the biggest question to ask yourself when editing is: “Can I remove something here?” Not, “What can I add?”. Every element must have a purpose to lead to the end goal of the story. ⁍ Do this and watch your viewers, client and team go ☟

In reference to the quoted, As a creative, you do have people you look up to or admire in your industry. The aim here isn’t to pick, combine and dump! Rather, • Study patterns from all these sources • Pick that which you love/resonates more with you • Leave out the part that makes less sense to you • Add your personality and grow with it 🌱 IN SUMMARY: Gather information and try to surpass them in your unique way.
“Good artists copy, great artists steal” - Pablo Picasso. You don’t always have to start from scratch. • Get ideas from various sources, • Combine or tweak it • Put in your own uniqueness And you have a hit!

Is this even legal? We sure need some level of rules to govern crypto. Why should a world changing economy be seen as a death trap/zone. This is wild.

Dear Editors, Tone down your edits and effects. It makes your video rowdy and too busy. But, how would you even know when you’re doing too much?

➊ TOO MANY EFFECTS: - Zooming every second - Constant transitions - Excessive motion graphics - Multiple sound effects per cut and a lot more. The result - Viewers now pay attention to the effects instead of the message passed. To solve it - Ask yourself: “Does this effect improve understanding or emotion? If no, trash it 🗑️ ➋ NO VISUAL BREATHING ROOM: - Text everywhere - Constant movement (bounces, slides etc) - No pauses - Every frame filled with information. - Emojis, arrows and highlights everywhere. The result - The human brain needs moments of rest to process information. Without that, the purpose of the video becomes non-existent. To solve - Alternate high-energy movements with calmer moments. If every moment is intense, then none of the moments feel intense. ➌ CUTTING TOO FAST: I see this often on TikTok. Cuts are good but cutting every second or after every sentence does not mean retention. Viewers need time to absorb information. Sometimes the first sentence sinks in because there was a second one hitting on same point. To solve - A powerful shot can stay on screen for 3-5 seconds if it is carrying an important information. Cut when the story demands it. ➍ USING EVERY TREND: - Trending captions - Trending transitions - Trending sound effects - Trending animations All in one video. The result - The video loses its identity. To solve - Choose one or two techniques that fit the most. Sounds that fit your video context, transitions that sit well with the purpose of the video etc. Not every trend fits the purpose of your video.
