How could have this been avoided? The Zonal defenders using staggered positioning in their set up 1. more zonal coverage and allows better cover if one of the 1st zonal has to push out to sandwich the flick on or defend the short corner 2. Harder to make runs between zonals
Flick ons at corners might be a trend of this World Cup Canada learned the hard way after conceding from a corner vs Bosnia Highlighting a key weakness that other teams might exploit Something that Jesse Marsch will need to quickly address Follow this thread @tacticlipfutbol

🇳🇱 Netherlands 2 – 2 Japan 🇯🇵 The Netherlands used their usual 4-3-3, a fairly rigid positional structure that can become a situational 2-3-5 or 3-2-5, with Dumfries pushing up, Summerville moving inside, and Gravenberch dropping into midfield. The Netherlands are not very fun offensively. Their game depends on individual inspiration from one of their front players, like Gravenberch and Summerville on the second goal, or on set pieces, where they are physically stronger than Japan, as in the first goal. Their structure is very rigid, and you don’t really see many rotations or movements. In exchange, they don’t suffer much in defensive transitions. Japan are well organized in their usual 5-4-1, moving into a 4-4-2 when the ball goes wide, with Nakamura pushing up and Ito shifting across. They are well concentrated throughout the game, but they don’t have much in transition without Mitoma. Japan attack in a 3-2-5, but they can also attack in a 4-3-3 with Kamada dropping between the centre-backs. These are mainly their two structures. It’s obvious that Japan are well coached with the ball. They are positionally quite rigid as well, but they have more counter-movements and patterns to progress. I was about to write that Japan are very good between the boxes, but not in the boxes, and that cost them the game. But Japanese players are stubborn, and they got a goal from a corner, where the Netherlands should be much more dominant. A well-deserved point for Japan.

Mexico – South Africa. 🇲🇽 Mexico 1. Positional attacks: really strong work in possession, with clear intentions. Excellent central overloads through the box midfield, consistently finding Quiñones and Bryan Gutierrez in advantageous situations. Outstanding confidence from Quiñones to accelerate play every time he received the ball. The second goal is a great example of a patient positional attack: they circulate until finding the free player, switch wide to Alvarado, and then attack the box with two strong presences like Raúl Jiménez and Quiñones. 2. High press in restarts: one of their main strengths in preparation. The 4-4-2 diamond structure is very well coached, and it directly led to the first goal. 3. Bryan Gutiérrez: not always technically consistent, but he solved one of Mexico’s long-standing issues, lack of depth in attack. He’s the perfect profile to complement their ball-to-feet players. 4. Mexico needs to improve when defending deeper. Against better possession teams they will suffer. It will be easier for them to move to a more zonal 5-4-1 or 4-4-2, instead of being too man-oriented in their approach. 🇿🇦South Africa 1. The game plan is difficult to read. They haven’t played like this for a long time. I understand the respect for Mexico, and it’s true they’ve had issues in a back four, but this level of change in their playing identity felt excessive. 2. South Africa are a much better team than what they showed, but they’ve struggled to be competitive defending their box and in understanding when to take risks in build-up and when to avoid them. 3. Limited involvement from two of their key attacking players, Appolis and Mofokeng, which reduced their attacking threat. Difficult to understand when they were very important players during the World Cup preparation.

🇺🇸 United States 4 - 1 Paraguay 🇵🇾 The United States are playing the modern game. A 3 1 or 3 2 build-up structure, with three defenders acting as anchors, two wing-backs providing width, and Balogun pinning the centre-backs. Inside, four players operate with considerable freedom to roam and rotate. Most of the United States' chances came through Pulisic's 1v1 ability, short combinations in central areas, and McKennie's runs in behind through the right half-space. Defensively, the US rely heavily on counter-pressing. That makes sense when you have so many players occupying central spaces in close proximity, along with ground-covering machines like Adams and McKennie. My feeling is that, against stronger opponents, the U.S. will adopt a more conservative approach. Robinson will likely be less aggressive with his positioning, attacking more selectively rather than constantly occupying the last line. Pulisic will provide more natural width from wider starting positions instead of drifting inside as frequently. The result should be a stronger rest-defense structure, allowing the team to deal with transitions more effectively while maintaining better defensive balance. Not much to say about Paraguay. Their compact 4-4-2 mid-block had worked well in previous games, but against a team building with a back three like the United States, you either need to press more aggressively with the wingers to form a 4-2-4, or adjust the structure altogether. If you do neither, you'll eventually be pinned back and dominated. A well deserved win from the United States.

The Triple Width concept is a key element of Diniz’s teams- how could it be used to create attacking threat? Parallel with the Left center back, Left winger and left back? Off the ball run creates the affordance to attack inside with the diagonal - LB/ RW / ST close proximity

Better quality footage of one of the videos 1. The LW crosses over to play on the right side after he switches 2. The RW moves inside, CAM goes outside, the CM pushes up with the ST 3. RB stays deep to form a diagonally orientated 3-4-3 4. LB gives minimum width @Effmatch

Gianni Vio explaining the free kick screen • Blocking the GK’s vision delays his reaction to the shot. Can be done with one wall or multiple • the interference Increases likelihood of a goal from shots on target • Potential ‘chip’ option in behind to score @Effmatch
Rashford will deservedly get the plaudits for a world class finish However a key detail going unnoticed in this goal was the Barca free kick screen that delays Cortouis reaction to the shot Ferran & Olmo moving away at the last moment creating the gap for Rashford to exploit

Bournemouth vs Aston Villa in 2016 | The most creative short corner in Premier League history? Very rarely do you see a team commit just 4 players to the box for a corner? An excellent move involving 3 decoy runs to create the cutback opportunity for the front post arrival

John has been putting out great work recently with regards to providing practical ways of coaching the game of 3 with micro games His 3v3 task reminds me of a session I delivered that also allows for dynamic interactions using decoy runs diagonal passes Combine to create!
📐👬2v2 /3v3: Training scenes of the game & Concepts: Middlesborough v Watford: 3 in a line/Corta Luz Watched a few Middlesborough games this season; really interesting to see their Game of 3 concepts horizontally and vertically throughout the pitch with players putting themselves between defender and ball to create dynamic and positional advantages in small areas of the pitch.
