ALT The Cook County State’s Attorney's recent legislative proposal to strengthen diversion programs for first-time, non-violent gun possession cases is a thoughtful approach to addressing gun violence. This proposal promotes a pathway for eligible residents to come into compliance with gun owner licensing regulations while they participate in a diversion program such as the First Time Weapon Offense program.    This is a common-sense alternative to costly and destabilizing prison time that leads to safer, more resilient communities. I commend State’s Attorney Eileen Burke, Senator Sims and Representative Slaughter for supporting this proposal for the benefit of Cook County residents and all of Illinois.
