New from me in the ABC, in the wake of Mark Butler's announcement about the #NDIS cuts. I've been quiet on the writing front lately. I'm currently working part-time and finishing off my PhD thesis. I've also been much more ill than usual... #saveourndis #auspol #disability

I feel so honoured he thought of me, and trusted me with this important piece. Here is an excerpt from the article:

Got my report for my PhD final milestone review today. Scored in the highest possible categories for my progress. 🥺 "The panel agreed that this is a wonderful and rich project, rigorously researched and written with elegant clarity."

"They suggest the following strategies for improvement: Form 1. Bibliographic apparatus: consider using footnotes rather than in-text citation so as not to break the flow of the writing, which is outstanding". 🥺 I'm so close to being done!! Only a couple more chapters.

Bad news: a CT confirmed my brain is MIA. Jk. Kind of. Cholesteatoma is back in my left ear and possibly my right. Seeing my surgeon in June. Surgeries to follow. At least I have an answer for my pain, vertigo, fevers, brain fog, tinnitus etc.

Another win: I did a public speaking gig a couple of weekends ago. Read a piece of my writing (about cholesteatoma and female friendship) to a crowd of ~100 people. Selfies from that night. Post-event, post-shower selfie shows genuine joy on my face bc of the feedback I got 🥺💖

The moment I knew for sure (I already knew). Doctors never call you personally for good test results. Ten years on from my first diagnosis, it looks like my left ear cholesteatoma is back. Worse still, it looks like there's something wrong with the right (my "good" ear) too.

Anyway. Waiting is the hard part. I'm working pretty much FT atm and also trying to finish my PhD thesis, while suffering all these symptoms and The Fear of the unknown.

If things get really bad I think I'll apply for a leave of absence from my PhD on medical grounds but that is also a scary option.
