🦈Sharks, the true sea activists! No megaphones needed - their nibbled fish and cut lines say it all, reminding us the sea is their home. Sharks and fishers share one story: a healthier, more sustainable sea. Together, we’re learning how to coexist with these marine guardians.🌊

🎣Happy #WorldFishingDay! During our fieldwork, several live pelagic stingrays were bycaught but viewed warily by fishers. Thanks to C-hooks & a developing safety system for fishers, these rays can be safely released. @SznDohrn team tagged one to track its survival & movements.

🎣Sustainable fishing in action! @SznDohrn researchers join fishers using circle hooks to reduce shark & ray mortality.🦈 🐟In the Ionian Sea, many young swordfish were safely released - showing how alternative gear can protect marine life without hurting fishing livelihoods.

👻🦈It’s #InternationalGhostSharkDay! Ghost sharks, or chimaeras, are ancient #deepsea relatives of sharks and rays - rare, mysterious, and vulnerable to bycatch. Through #life_elife we work to reduce bycatch while improving the knowledge and conservation of cartilaginous fishes.

🌊 Back at sea with @SznDohrn researchers and local fishers! Using circle hooks on pelagic longlines, we aim to protect sharks and rays. 🦈 A juvenile blue shark was caught, tagged with a satellite tag, and safely released in the Ionian Sea - thanks to the circle hook’s shape!

🦈Rare sighting in the Bergeggi Island MPA! Yesterday, a Critically Endangered bull ray was filmed by the MPA’s underwater cam. Thanks to diver Paolo Cappucciati for the prompt report to the MPA, @SznDohrn & #elife_project: a perfect example of teamwork for marine biodiversity!

🦈 What if sharks behaved like us? Polluted our homes, netted us, hung our skulls on the wall? 🎩 “Caught this one off Sardinia." Absurd? That’s their reality. Sharks aren’t monsters - just victims of bad PR.

🦈💙 Huge thanks to @LIFEprogramme for spotlighting our work (✒️ shorturl.at/PKQeY) — and to @thetimes for covering our response to recent ray strandings. With #life_elife, we're protecting sharks, rays & the Med. A win for ocean conservation! 🌊🌍

🎬 50 years ago Jaws hit theaters. It didn’t demonize sharks - it showed our fear of the unknown, but it also sparked wonder for the ocean and marine life. 🦈 With #Elife_project, we protect sharks & rays in the Med. 🔬 More science, less fear. 🌍 More conservation, more future.
