"His Love Makes Me Beautiful" from Funny Girl (1968) is when Fanny Brice's dream is finally realized: she joins the Ziegfeld Follies and is cast as the beautiful bride in a lavishly romantic musical number. But uncomfortable with playing a conventional beauty, she adds a comic twist by appearing pregnant in her wedding gown, turning the production on its head. Barbra Streisand plays the scene to perfection, using her extraordinary comic timing and expressive physicality to transform what could have been a standard showpiece into a hilarious star turn. It's a number driven almost entirely by Streisand's singular screen presence, capturing the essence of Fanny Brice's talent: succeeding not by conforming to expectations, but by being unapologetically herself. #FunnyGirl #BarbraStreisand

One dance sequence that had a lasting effect on the future MGM musicals produced by the famous Arthur Freed is the "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue" ballet in Words and Music (1948). Originally conceived as a comic ballet in Rodgers & Hart's On Your Toes (1936), it was transformed by Roger Edens (Freed's associate producer, composer and arranger) into a raw, sexy, high-stakes drama for Gene Kelly and Vera-Ellen. Robert Alton choreographed Vera-Ellen and the ensemble, while Kelly created his own routine. Kelly also devised the use of a revolving stage to propel the action from scene to scene and suggested placing a 28mm lens in a pit at the foot of the staircase so that when Vera-Ellen, struck by a bullet, falls toward the camera, her face is dramatically distorted. The shot violated Louis B. Mayer's famous dictum that "the ladies had to look pretty at all times, no matter what"; but Freed backed Kelly, and the result is one of the boldest moments in MGM musical history. #GeneKelly #VeraEllen #HollywoodMusical
