Upon learning of Starmer's crusade against children under 16 watching YouTube, my 10-year-old son commented: "He's proposing it now because his own children have just turned 16." This surprised me, as I wasn't even aware or remembering he had children. I looked it up and apparently he has two, born in 2008 and, crucially, 2010! So far, I found it the most revealing comment I heard about the whole shebang.
So YouTube is effectively a streaming TV channel in our house, like Netflix or HBO. Labor's ridiculous attempts to ban it for teenagers, when we watch it together at home, will just bring the law into disrepute. Pointless, ill-thought-out change, from a pointless leader.

Australia banned under 16s from social media back in December 6 months on, the effect has been minimal. Supposedly 5 million accounts have been deactivated, but 78% of under 16s reportedly still access the apps and websites that are theoretically banned. Prior to the ban, it was 84%, so the ban’s effect is essentially null

This announcement reflects legitimate concerns about children's safety online, but a ban of this scale would change how children access and experience the digital world. The UK Government must ensure that any decisions are informed by children themselves and by independent experts. We are concerned that a blanket ban may look protective on paper, but instead pushes children into less regulated spaces, where they are less likely to seek help when something goes wrong. Children growing up in poverty are likely to be among those most affected. If ministers want to make the online world safer, the answer is not simply keeping children off platforms. The focus must be on providing better support for parents by making platforms safer by design, tackling addictive and high-risk features such as stranger contact, live streaming, nudification tools and unsafe AI systems, so that children are not exposed to harm online.

It isn't conspiracy, though, is it? The only way to bar under-16s from social media is to mandate proof of age for everyone, creating a mass database of Digital ID, giving β€œpowerful actors” the means to track anyone, including UK Govt for β€˜safeguarding’. So @elonmusk is right.
Replying to @lewis_goodall
As I say, this is going to be a real communications test for the government. Conspiracy is going to spread very, very quickly- with some extremely powerful actors propelling it.

BINGO There are already parental controls on routers, accounts, and smartphones to regulate: A The apps they can download B The websites they can access C The time they can spend D The people they can talk to Just because some parents are lazy, it doesn't mean this makes sense.
Wth was her 6 year old doing on You Tube anyway?! SIX!!! If you can't control what your SIX (!!!!) year old is watching without government intervention you are simply a failed parent. SIX year-olds should have no access to the internet unaccompanied. Why wasn't she given a book, a toy or even a TV show - not You Tube!!

So, the child here isn't allowed to go on YouTube. But her mother is happy to post her crying on X for everyone to comment on.
Some tricky conversations this evening about the impending social media ban. β€˜I don’t even know who this government guy is’ β€˜Keir Starmer’ β€˜Keir Starmer, what does that mean’

This is the introduction of Digital ID through the backdoor. "Is it not frustrating having to give out your ID constantly and reverify? Here is one single ID with all your data and biometrics on it to sign in to everything; oh, and it tracks all your activity"
There's no way to ban under 16s without age verifying everyone, which means ID checks or face scans to log on for every adult in the country. Thats the actual prize here, ID locking the whole internet and ending anonymity, and "for the children" is just the trojan horse to sell it. Parents can already keep their kids off social media, they dont need a surveillance state to do it for them.

Someone who gets it. It solves nothing, makes it harder to create sensible regulations, and ignores the harmful impact the addictive and misinformation content have on people over 16 too. Stupid policy.
Congratulations @Keir_Starmer You’ve once again identified a problem- social media use for children- and once again made a complete pigs ear of trying to solve it. It won’t solve the problem. It won’t stop children accessing harmful apps It won’t stop adults contacting children on those apps It will make parents think the issue is solved when it isn’t You’ve put virtue above actually making things better- yet again.

Currently, to labour, at 16 you are old enough to start driving provisionally, consent to sex, they want them to have the vote, mature enough to get part time work... BUT, you can't watch educational or hobby YouTube videos after school and dinner.

Starmers plan will just push the problem underground and make in more difficult for parents to protect their children.

We go from being focused on data privacy and security to the government demanding a data back door to unencrypted messages, photos, and more. This isn't about children's devices, this is about every phone having this as an os level feature. That is VERY dangerous. I
To clear up any confusion: There are TWO bans on under 16's access to social media in the UK. The first is at the app level and this comes into play next year. It will require selected social media apps to prompt for age verification when accessing them. The second more insidious one is happening much sooner. This one is the 'nudity detection' feature and this one operates on device level. It will require every adult to show a form of ID in order to operate their phones and tablets without restrictions/monitoring. The voluntary deadlines to tech companies to implement this is around early September this year. If Apple, Google and others don’t implement device-level monitoring by then, the government has said it will bring forward legislation to make it mandatory. People saying "Just use a VPN!" are not understanding how this works.

Apps, services, and websites can and must do more. But giving the government a total unencrypted backdoor is simply stupid. We all cried foul murder at these illiberal suggestions, but now they pretend it's for children's safety there's idiots suddenly supporting it.

Backdoors and verification checks undermine privacy, security, and will push people into less regulated or less controlled platforms and services. This does not tackle any of the problems. This does not solve the unsafe internet. It's all social control and a headline.

Banning teenagers from social media with ludicrous conditions is unworkable, unrealistic and unwanted. Here’s a mad idea - let parents parent. Not the state, but mums, dads, grandparents or whoever else. Restore Britain will always trust the family over big government.

STARMER says kids will get around his social media ban (as the vast majority do in Australia) but argues a law’s ineffectiveness should not prevent its introduction.

Again, it seems the people cheering this on are people too lazy to actually parent their kids and teach them how to safely use social media and the internet, and set up parental controls. Stripping away access to free education (YouTube) and much more is outright bad
Extremely pleased and relieved that this Labour Gov is banning social media for under-16s. As a mum of a pre-teen, it’s the thing that keeps me up at night. I know many of my constituents feel the same. That’s why I called for a ban, and I am delighted we’re implementing one.
