If you ask Polanski whether, since the Tories are led by a black woman or Reform UK’s chair is Muslim, they couldn’t possibly have issues with racism, sexism or Islamophobia, he’d reject that ‘logic’. Remember that when he tries to use his Judaism to deflect about antisemitism.

Solidarity with Michael Ben-Gad, Professor of Economics at City University. Students are demanding his sacking simply because he is an Israeli Jew who has done (mandatory) military service. The antisemitic harassment he is being subjected to is horrifying. I hesitate to amplify it, but British academics need to understand what is happening. instagram.com/p/DPtJchuiInk/… instagram.com/reel/DP6Wop0iM…

So, Radiohead front man Thom Yorke has posted an 8 page statement about the Israel/Gaza conflict on Instagram. In it he claims Netanyahu and 'his crew of extremists are totally out of control and need to be stopped' because he has a 'transparent desire to take control of Gaza and the West Bank'. He criticises the 'blockade' and asks us why 'endless thousands of innocent human souls are still being expelled from the earth... for what?' He calls for the 'international community' to do all they can to make Israel 'cease'. But in a surprising turn of events, Yorke goes on to say: 'At the same time the unquestioning Free Palestine refrain that surrounds us all does not answer the simple question of why the hostages have still not all been returned? For what possible reason? Why did Hamas choose the truly horrific acts of October 7th? The answer seems obvious, and I believe Hamas chooses too to hide behind the suffering of its people, in an equally cynical fashion for their own purposes'. So, Israel and Hamas were given a good kicking in Yorke's statement. But if you could hazard a guess, which side do you think is responding positively to it and which side is having a massive meltdown about it? You know the answer. Thank you for your courage, Thom Yorke.

Ed is right & I’d go one further: there is something worrying about the fury being heaped on someone trying to explain the motives of people who have done wrong. Very few people intend to be bad. They are all heroes in their own stories. We have to understand *their* motivations.

I’m a friend (and admirer) of Tom Holland, so not an impartial commentator, but the criticism he’s received today is totally unwarranted. He was describing the motivations of those in authority, not justifying them. Obviously the government of a multi-racial society takes inter-communal relations seriously, and there is an underlying and understandable view of minorities as potential victims. Often this is untrue and naive, and sometimes compassion becomes a cover for cowardice. But he was describing - using the much underrated principle of charity - why people did the wrong things. Multicultural societies always live in fear of communal violence (one reason I’ve long been critical of diversity being a ‘strength’). Sometimes people use this as an excuse for their own agenda, but it’s still reality. Many people are rightly angry about what happened and seem to need people to get angry at
