Don’t just try your best - do your best.

Just received my Seth Mann Absolute Batman 19 from One Stop Comic Shop. Protecting my @CGCComics slab with a @KEYGUARDSHOP guard. I thought about using red but the black pops differently with the spot foil.

I think there’s a difference between helping new collectors avoid hype traps and gatekeeping. Education protects the hobby. Gatekeeping makes people feel like they don’t belong in it. I’m all for sharing history, context, and lessons from past crashes. That’s needed. But the goal should be helping people enjoy collecting smarter, not making them feel late to a world someone else owns.

Gatekeeping is the weirdest part of collecting. Knowing the history should make you a guide, not a bouncer. New collectors are not a threat. Different ways of collecting are not watering the hobby down. People finding joy in signatures, slabs, raw books, variants, art, or creator experiences is growth. You can protect the culture without acting like you own the entrance.

No disagreement. Signatures have always mattered. I’ve been collecting since the 90s. My point is that the ecosystem around them has changed: more audience segments, more creator visibility, more activations beyond the books, and more ways for new collectors to enter the space. That’s what’s creating new grails.

It’s only corny when the promised experience doesn’t deliver. The real test is how you handle the miss, make it right for the audience, and turn failure into loyalty. Not everyone knows how to do that well.
