I found emergency management through wildland firefighting. I wrote a memoir about that transformative experience that hit Amazon this week. Digital available now. Paperback soon. Let me know what you think. #wildland #firefighter amazon.com/dp/B0B7VBDGJC/ref…

Mostly moved on to bluer skies. Find me there, and good luck folks.

I do most of my cooking on a 10” cast iron skillet or the grill. But every once in a while I take the box of cookware I inherited from the tool shed, knock the rust off, and re-season the lot with bacon grease before storing again. This winter I’m putting the dutch oven to use.

Finished the trip with a drive through Massanutten Mtn Fort Valley and then down towards Stanley and Luray. I spent many a day and some nights between here and Shenandoah NP doing wilderness SAR years ago. Some good memories. Some not. But it’s nice to get back nonetheless.

Them: “How would you describe your personal aesthetic?” Me: “Cracker Barrel gift shop.”

Took the youngest to go find “Smokey Bear’s family” in Shenandoah NP today. Time well spent.

Went for a hike in his morning. Was worth it.

Went to work dressed like this on Halloween and handed out two pounds of bacon I fried in a cast iron skillet to my “work-place proximity associates” while discussing Scotland and woodworking. Nobody noticed anything out of the ordinary about me. Live your dreams, kids.

I’m staffing a paramedic chase car tonight because it’s less stressful than staying home and watching the neighborhood kids try to dodge moving cars while trick-or-treating.

Harvest update: All done, but we lost a load when the chains holding the gravity box snapped. Box slid forward, broke the axle and tipped partially and eventually all the way over. Nobody injured. Same thing happened when we were kids and nearly killed my brother. #Iowa

Parents sent me a box of old pictures, and I can confirm that six-year-old me liked the same stuff as adult me.

First night since before Hurricane Francine that I’m back in my station with my crew on my rig. Started IVs, gave IM meds, taught Entoven’s Triangle and SpO2 vs EtCO2 to BLS providers eager to learn, and helped citizens who very much needed it. Was a good night. #Paramedic

It’s too dark to do much outside, the kids and dog are asleep, and I have an old book and mint tea to myself in the study. This is living. #BookTwitter

Bought this brass Merryweather Fire Helmet from a friend nearing retirement. His parents bought the helmet in London shortly after WWII and brought it back to the US, but otherwise he had no do on it. Radar and I are trying to find out where in the UK it came from. Help?

I’m a sentimental person in general, and this is especially true for anything regarding my kids and home state of Iowa. So you better believe the picture I snapped of my son and nephew that Our Iowa Magazine published was going to get framed. My 4yo daughter chose the color.

My 4yo found the first aid supplies in my work bag and used it like an MCI kit where every “dolly” in the house got bandaged up. This kid is going places.

A quiet Saturday at home for the first time since forever. Feels good to drink coffee, curse, scrape my knuckles, and work on this old Jeep.

Been a long hurricane season with an exceptionally awesome planning team. They chose Pokémon characters as their mascots, and today they gifted me a Pokémon coin as thanks for supporting them. It’s one of the best gifts I’ve ever received. #EMGTwitter
