Shark belly-buttons heal! Skin denticles surround the 'scar', then as the skin heals over the denticles grow to crowd the space. Whether sharks are born in eggs (yolk-attached) or live (placental) they all have umbilical scars that heal. 🦈🦷 #babyshark #skinteeth #sharkscience

Halfway through Prosanta’s @PREAUX_FISH insightful & entertaining page turner, Explaining Life through Evolution. We’re fish 🔥🔥🔥 Had I read this book 20 years ago, I would undoubtedly be an evolutionary biologist. I want to gift 10 books to African students. DM me.

NEW PAPER: Ever wondered why insects fly in all sorts of crazy patterns around lights at night? So did we! We set about recording flying insects to work out what's going on. I'll summarise what we found in this 🧵. Spoiler: We don't think they confuse lights with the moon.

Following up yesterday’s tweet from @rthandiackal on our #zebrafish locomotion work, it’s hard to overemphasize how detailed the velocity vector fields are using IR light and small algae as tracer particles. Paper in @J_Exp_Biol (bit.ly/3gwRrI5) #swimming #fishsci

#SharkSunday 🦈 Some shark teeth overlap in the jaw so they work together like chainsaw links. But overlapping teeth complicate tooth replacement. Nurse sharks have teeth with no overlap so they easily move forward independent of their neighbors. (@UFsharkresearch)
