The silent family pressure that almost broke me after moving to the diaspora. Back in Naija, everyone celebrated when I left. “Our son has gone to shine.” But nobody warned me about the invisible weight that would follow me abroad. 👇

1/ The harsh truth about “making it” in the diaspora that nobody tells you when leaving Naija. Everyone hyped it up: “Just go abroad and blow.”
Reality? It’s harder, lonelier, and slower than the stories on Instagram.

5/ If you’re in that tough season right now — it’s normal.
The game is long. The people who win are the ones who keep showing up even when it’s not glamorous.

1/ How I stopped comparing myself to people back home — and it changed my life in the diaspora. When I first left Naija, Instagram and WhatsApp status became my biggest enemy. Everyone was posting new cars, houses, weddings, and “God is good” testimonies. I felt like I was failing.

5/ Today, I celebrate others genuinely, but I no longer use their success as a measuring stick for mine. My peace returned. My focus sharpened. My own progress became visible.

Had a customer come in and order two scoops of chocolate ice cream in a cup. Me: *scoops the ice cream* Her: "Those aren't the same size." Me: "Oh, sorry—" *starts to even them out* Her: "No, stop. Don't touch them." Me: "...okay." Her: "I want new scoops." Me: "You want me to start over?" Her: "Yes. And make them even this time." So I throw those out and scoop two new ones, trying to make them as even as possible. Her: "That one's bigger." *points* Me: "I really don't think—" Her: "I can see it." I tried three more times and she rejected all of them. Finally I scooped two that she said were acceptable, but she kept staring at them while I rang her up like she was still deciding. She came back a few days later and ordered strawberries. Same thing. I wasn't even that far off on the sizes, I don't think. My manager said she'd been doing it since before I worked there.

Or, she wanted coffee, but she wanted to say it was decaf.

Me: entering Japanese cat café. employee stops me immediately. Employee: One rule. Me: Okay. Employee: Orange cat bites people from France. Me: I’m not French. Employee: Good. I sit down, cats everywhere, peaceful, adorable, therapeutic. then gigantic orange cat jumps onto table, built like retired wrestler. Cat staring at me aggressively. Employee watching nervously from distance. Me: I thought he only hated French people. Employee: He improvises. cat slowly pushes my drink off table while maintaining eye contact. Me: THIS IS TARGETED. small child nearby points at cat. Child: That one evil. Employee: No no, He just passionate. cat suddenly climbs onto my lap, starts purring violently. Me: …wait he likes me? Employee shocked. Employee: Impossible. another worker comes over, then another, entire staff now observing me like chosen prophet. Manager arrives. Manager: He has never trusted customer before. Me: What does that mean. Manager bows slightly. Manager: You must take him. Me: TAKE HIM WHERE. orange cat already asleep on me. Employee quietly bringing adoption papers. Me: I CAME HERE FOR COFFEE.

What Bayern Munich taught me about life and success in the diaspora. I’m a die-hard Bayern fan, but beyond the football, their mentality has real lessons for every Naija person grinding abroad.

5/ Lesson 4: **Stay humble, but have killer confidence** Bayern players celebrate wins but never get carried away. They know the work continues. In the diaspora, stay humble with your Naija people, but carry yourself with confidence when chasing opportunities. s, o

6/ Final Lesson: **Legacy over temporary noise** Bayern isn’t just chasing one season — they’re building a club that lasts. Build your life the same way. Think long-term. Your name, reputation, and foundation should outlive one good month. To every Naija Bayern fan (and even haters 😂) building abroad: What football club’s mentality has helped you in life or business? Or drop one lesson you’ve learned from football. Let’s talk 👇 🦅 @EmjayHbe2227 ---
