When the attacks on Prince Harry and Meghan in the press hit fever pitch over the next few weeks, just remember that he is taking Rupert Murdoch to court in January 2025.

Approx 29k resident doctors applied for 9k training posts this year. They're not "choosing" to forgo specialist training, @gmcuk, they're being forced out of it by the decision to artificially suppress numbers of doctor training posts, even though we're so short of consultants.

We're pleased to share the second in our annual series of #StateOfMed reports – Workforce. This focuses on the changing shape of the medical workforce across the UK. This year’s report shows that the medical register continues to grow, as does the diversity of the doctors on it. Doctors’ career paths are also changing, with more doctors than ever before choosing locally employed (LE) roles, working outside of formal postgraduate training pathways and with local contracts. In England and Wales, where data is currently available to us, the number of LE doctors grew by 75% between 2019 and 2023 – this makes this the fastest growing cohort on the register. As we look to the next decade, it’s critical that all doctors have the infrastructure, support and resources they need to achieve their ambitions. That’s in the interests of doctors, as well as the interests of a growing and ageing population. Discover more insights and key statistics by reading the report on our website gmc-uk.org/-/media/documents…

In the last year alone, 400,000 hectares of agricultural land have been taken out of use for farming, as the wealthiest purchase land. Doing so allows them to avoid IHT. /9

So, I've just spent a bit of time looking into the debate on IHT and farming. I... got a shock. First, a note: I have a friend who runs a family farm. In his view, the whole thing is a something and nothing. 🧵

To give a sense of comparison? Jeremy Clarkson purchased a whopping 400 hectares (20 times the average farm size) back in 2008. So whatever you do, don't think he's the average farmer; he really isn't. /7

Labour's family farm tax problem should be really easy to fix, and they could probably even do it in a revenue neutral way - eg instead of 20% above ÂŁ1m go to 30% above ÂŁ5 million. They've got it wrong, and if you're going to have to do a U-turn then best to get on with it.

To all conference attendees everywhere, please never decline a mic. The loudness of a voice is not the only thing that makes it intelligible and so some of us cannot hear you regardless of how well you project. This is my 11th year of tweeting this plea. #POD24

In the late 1970s, working (in her words) in 'stealth mode' as a woman, Lynn developed very large scale integration (VLSI) of computer components, a key breakthrough in computer science, which enabled the modern computer and ultimately put smartphones in everyone's pocket.

It's timely to highlight the life & work of computer scientist Lynn Conway. In the late 1960s, she transitioned from male to female and was sacked by IBM as a result. For some years, she went underground and, for the rest of her career, worked as a woman - herstory unknown.

I actually need journalists and MPs to talk about the terrifying rise of “rent to rent” because people are renting properties privately from landlords and then subletting them to OUR COUNCILS as social housing and then pocketing profit

Schools cannot 'make' neurodivergent pupils behave by giving them a suspension - you wouldn't expect someone in a wheelchair to start walking because you sent them home for a week. Autism can be just as disabling. The way to address it is to build an inclusive environment.

When neurodivergent children are dysregulated, and in a bad environment, they can struggle to behave. This is an inherent part of their disability. You cannot 'make' them behave by shouting at them, in the same way you cannot make a blind person see by yelling in their face.
