Thinking of all the people caught up in Sunderland this evening who were just going about their daily lives and the emergency services putting themselves in harms way to keep the public safe. Gut wrenching 💔

He is from a deprived area close to Bishop Auckland , and actually went to a state secondary until 6th form. Judging by his academic performance at Oxbridge, I’d chance a bet that Barney 6th form was in fact a scholarship. The devil works hard, but the rumour mill works harder.

A thread on why research skills gained at university level can be life-saving: 18 years ago my mum told me she’d seen a tick on her arm. I was studying for my PhD in York while she was five hours south of me. A week later she said a bulls-eye rash had emerged around the bite.

As a baby, I was abandoned and left to die. After hearing my cries, neighbours called the police. I recovered in hospital from malnutrition, dehydration.
