ALT In recent years, some states have modified their electoral systems to incorporate alternative methods of voting (e.g. Ranked Choice) or to change the structure of primary and general elections. For instance, Alaska now uses a statewide open primary, followed by a Ranked Choice election among the top four vote-getters from the primary. In this brief presentation, Dr. Brendan Sullivan, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, Emmanuel College, will discuss some of these electoral methods that are in use or being considered for future use. We’ll look at results from example elections to better understand that changing how we vote may have an impact on who ends up participating in elections, as well as who ends up in office.
